The freedom from fear which...

The freedom from fear which Christian Science brings to all who rely on its teachings has brought many blessings to my family and to me.

One evening soon after our younger child had been put to bed, she suddenly cried out as if in great discomfort. I discovered that she had put into her ear a ring she had been wearing. I tried to retrieve it with tweezers, but when I touched the child's ear, the object moved further inside and almost out of sight.

I took the child on my lap and quietly talked to her of God's love for His children, realizing that this was an opportunity for us to prove the truths she had learned in the Christian Science Sunday School. She had learned that God is everywhere all the time, and we reasoned that no situation can arise which can cause His children suffering or unhappiness. We also gave thanks for Christian Science, which teaches us to turn to God for healing and protection.

When I looked at the child's ear a few minutes later, I found the ring in the outer part of the ear where I could easily lift it out. We both expressed gratitude for God's ever-presence and for the freedom from fear which we have when we turn to Him in prayer.

On one occasion I was notified by telephone that my husband had been injured in an automobile accident. No details were given, but the caller told me that an ambulance had been called. I had such a sense of God's protection for all His children and the impossibility of an accident that I was able to change my clothes and arrange with a neighbor to care for our daughter before leaving the house to go to the scene.

I was unable to reach a Christian Science practitioner, but I telephoned to my mother and asked her to call one and explain our need. As I neared the place of the accident, I became fearful of what I might have to meet; but the angel thought came, "God is there and everywhere." Also a passage from Mrs. Eddy's poem "The Mother's Evening Prayer" came to me. It reads (Poems, p. 4):

"His habitation high is here, and nigh,
His arm encircles me, and mine, and
all."

I found that the police officers had called an ambulance because they feared that my husband had sustained internal injuries. They immediately canceled the call when they found that we were Christian Scientists and were having the help of a practitioner. They offered to help us in any way they could and were not insistent on a medical examination.

My husband had been protected from serious injury although his head had hit the windshield with great force. We were able to attend the Wednesday evening testimony meeting in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, that night and were uplifted by the reading from the desk and the testimonies of healing.

This experience proved to be an opportunity to learn more of God's ever-presence. The evidence of injury was quickly overcome through the help of the practitioner, who explained that the appearance of injury could remain only as long as we believed that there had been a moment when we were out of God's care. When we understood that we are never apart from God, the healing followed.

For the Christian Science practitioners, who are always ready to help us, and for the Sunday School, in which the children learn to use Christian Science to meet their needs, I am very grateful.—(Mrs.) Barbara Ann Keeling, Kansas City, Missouri.
