Blessings Await the Visitor

"The natural fruits of Christian Science Mind-healing are harmony, brotherly love, spiritual growth and activity." So writes our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in her work "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 213).

Referring to the above statement, a librarian writes: "The truth of this statement has been proved on many occasions when someone, a stranger or a church member bowed down with problems, has come into the Reading Room. The librarian has seen the whole picture change after talking with him and encouraging him to read the Bible, the writings of our Leader, or an inspiring article in one of the Christian Science periodicals. The burdens have dropped away."

"Perhaps," writes another librarian, "the visitor is just a timid inquirer, hesitant and doubtful, or a beginner in Christian Science, sick or troubled, seeking the cure or comfort which Science has brought to others, or one who has heard of the logic of Christian Science that divine law can be understood and utilized with certain and good effect. All are in need of the understanding of God's allness, His nearness, His love for His children. These seekers should be able to find our Reading Room easily and then, through the helpful displays, glimpse the wealth of spiritual inspiration which awaits them in the writings of Mrs. Eddy and in the other authorized literature. We pray in the words of our Leader (ibid., p. 182): 'May the wanderer in the wilderness of mortal beliefs and fears turn hither with satisfied hope. May the birds of passage rest their weary wings amid the fair foliage of this vine of His husbanding, find shelter from the storm and a covert from the tempest.'"

The following are accounts of those whose experiences have been improved and blessed by a visit to the Reading Room.

A woman entered the door hesitatingly and said: "I hardly know why I am here. I've passed this room many times, but today I felt impelled to come in." She knew nothing about Christian Science except that many years ago a friend had received help by coming to a Reading Room. This caller had been informed that she had cataracts, which would have to be removed from her eyes eventually, and that she also had diabetes. The librarian talked to her encouragingly, assuring her that Christian Science heals; that it proves the nothingness of the claims of mortal mind; and that anyone who is willing to turn to God in childlike trust can be healed. She was shown the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. Certain passages were read to her. She was told that many people had been healed through just the prayerful reading of the book.

After reading in the study room for an hour, she came out and said, "I must have that book today." She bought a copy and left with the intention of getting in touch with a Christian Science practitioner for treatment.

Another woman came into a Reading Room in a disturbed frame of mind. She said that she had been shortchanged by a cashier who was new at his job at the hotel where she was staying. The management would not believe her story. She was laboring under a deep sense of resentment and came to ask the librarian for a helpful thought in regard to the situation.

The thought of mercy came to the librarian. She explained that since she, the visitor, expected the hotel people to believe in her honesty and sincerity, she must also accord to them the same Godlike qualities which she claimed for herself. This satisfied her. Within an hour she telephoned the Reading Room that the management had reimbursed her. She was overjoyed at the immediate results of spiritualized thinking.

A man whose hands had been burned by acid had been told that they would not heal. He was sent by a friend to a Reading Room to obtain Science and Health. Two months later, after studying the book, he returned to show his hands, healed and normal.

Rich blessings, indeed, await sincere seekers for Truth in our Reading Rooms.
