I wish to express my gratitude...
I wish to express my gratitude for Christian Science, which is the way that Christ Jesus introduced to us in his ministry.
It was my privilege to attend a Christian Science Sunday School for several years. There I became familiar with the Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lessons and had the opportunity to store up many foundational treasures of Truth which have since proved invaluable in daily experience.
During the epidemic in 1918 I was healed of influenza. I was in a coma, and my father sat at my bedside praying the Lord's Prayer. The spiritual understanding with which he prayed resulted in my immediate healing. I arose and had dinner with the family, played and sang hymns during the evening, and reported for work the next morning.
My confidence in the healing power of Christian Science was strengthened when our three-year-old son had a relapse following the measles, and the condition became serious. Although a Christian Science practitioner was working prayerfully for him, there was no apparent improvement. I knew that all inharmonious thinking, including my own fear, must be eliminated. One evening, almost in desperation, I left the house to be alone with God and stepped out onto the porch, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. There I was mentally able to place the child in God's arms.
A statement from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy came to thought (p. 504), "The rays of infinite Truth, when gathered into the focus of ideas, bring light instantaneously, whereas a thousand years of human doctrines, hypotheses, and vague conjectures emit no such effulgence." I reasoned that if this statement was true and if I could bring into focus my understanding of the facts of Truth, the healing would be as certain as the flame which bursts forth when the sun's rays are focused on an object through a glass lens. I do not know how long I stood there recalling and dwelling upon the treasures of Truth learned in the study of Christian Science and stored up in consciousness. Finally the fear was gone, and I felt at peace. From that evening on, the child gained in strength until the healing was complete.
After fourteen years away from school, I returned to and finished high school and then went on and earned two university degrees and a teaching credential. Through reliance on the guidance of divine Mind, I found that all my needs were met as they came up, such as those for tuition, transportation, and care of the children. Two years later my husband passed on, and I was left to provide for four teen-age sons. I then realized how certain had been God's guidance in advance of my need.
The three sons who were in the armed services during the Second World War were divinely protected. For this, I am deeply grateful. For health, supply, daily protection on the highway, and for the demonstration of the happiness of home wherever I may be, I am also very grateful.
The gratitude expressed here is but a small part of what I feel for the satisfaction found in the teachings of Christian Science. I am thankful to God for Christ Jesus and for Mrs. Eddy, whose loving guidance established all the activities of The Mother Church.—(Mrs.) Frances Wilson, Long Beach, California.
