Covenant

(I Chron. 16:15; Gen. 9:9, and so forth) (kuv'e-nant—u as in up, e as in silent, a as in account). The Hebrew berith is thought to derive from a root meaning "to bind"; hence a binding pact, agreement, or compact. The corresponding Greek word diatheke (Hebr. 8:6, 10) can also be rendered "testament," as in the phrase "New Testament," or alternatively "New Covenant."
