How grateful I am to God for...
How grateful I am to God for our beloved Leader, whose unselfish and untiring efforts made Christian Science available to mankind!
In my early days of the study and application of this Science, I was suddenly attacked with severe stomach pains. All through the night I did prayerful work, knowing that as God's perfect and beloved child, I was constantly being sustained, maintained, supported, and upheld by Him. Early the following morning I became unconscious and appeared to be passing on.
A practitioner was called, who faithfully worked for me. The result was that I gradually made progress. On the fourth day I was dressed and downstairs carrying out some of my normal duties, and at the end of a week I was out of doors.
During the Second World War, I was returning home one evening by train in the blackout. I wished to get off at a certain small station where the platform was long enough to accommodate only one coach. I had been inadvertently put in the wrong coach, and when the train stopped I stepped down about four and one half feet onto the track and badly injured my foot. I was helped up and taken home.
All that night I suffered considerably, but I arose the following morning and carried on with my duties. I remember holding to the truths that man is God's perfect image and likeness: that man is maintained, sustained, guided, and guarded by God alone; and that in reality no accident had occurred, since accidents are unknown in God's kingdom.
One who was not interested in Christian Science was anxious that I obtain medical aid. Instead, however, I telephoned a Christian Science practitioner, who lovingly helped me. I continued with my normal activities, and by the fourth day all pain and swelling had disappeared. The one who had advised medical aid stated she had never seen a foot and leg in such a state heal so quickly.
Since my husband is a seafarer, we felt in 1943 that it would be wise to move our home from the Midlands to Liverpool, his home port. I worked prayerfully to know that in reality man does not dwell in a material habitation but in God, divine Spirit, where restriction and lack have no abode.
On an occasion three months later I felt impelled to arrange to go to Liverpool. I obtained a local paper and wrote a letter in answer to the only advertisement offering accommodation. Then I returned home.
Three days later, I received a telegram asking me to telephone a given number in Liverpool. I did so and was informed by the landlord that he had given me the tenancy of the flat because of the grateful tone of my application and that he had chosen me out of one hundred and seventy-eight applicants. I told him that I would not be able to occupy the flat for another three weeks, and he replied: " The flat will not be ready for three weeks; but if you cannot come for three months, it is still yours."
At that time, wartime restrictions were still in force. Under them, goods could not be transported to as distant a point as Liverpool. I was not perturbed by the rule. I knew that the way would unfold for a solution of this problem.
Three weeks later, when I was ready to remove, a letter was received saying that the flat was ready for occupation. At six o'clock that same evening, news came over the radio that the mileage limit had been extended, and I was able to remove the next day.
I have always felt so grateful to be living in the age of Mrs. Eddy's discovery of Christian Science and for the privilege of understanding something of the truths it teaches of God and man. For my many blessings, I am deeply grateful.—(Mrs.) Blanche Taggart, Malvern, Worcestershire, England.
