Before marriage I had been a...
Before marriage I had been a trained medical nurse, and until I found Christian Science I believed very strongly in medicine and medical treatment. I had tried many doctors in an effort to gain relief from severe migraine. Each one had told me that there was nothing he could do to help me. Finally I underwent a major operation in the hope that it might help, but the day I was taken home from the hospital I had the worst attack I had ever had; so I knew that the operation had failed. By this time other beliefs were being manifested, such as anemia, stomach disorders, and nervous troubles.
The last doctor who tried to help me told my husband that unless I was constantly under the influence of certain injected drugs, I would be a semi-invalid. The treatment caused much pain and discomfort, and one day I found myself saying aloud, "Live or die, I'll never take another one of those injections." With this decision came a sense of peace, and I began to pray humbly to God to show me what I must do to be healed.
About this time I was given a copy of The Christian Science Journal by the owner of a beauty shop who knew of my great need. She told me that she knew Christian Science would help me. She also told me about practitioners, who, she explained, could help me through prayer. I selected from the list in the Journal a practitioner in my locality and went to see her the same day.
That first hour spent with her about nineteen years ago changed my whole life and the lives of every member of my immediate family. She lent me a copy of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, and I read it constantly. In a few weeks the change in me was so noticeable that my husband started to read it too. In two months we enrolled our two small children in the Sunday School of the local Christian Science church and were attending church services regularly. My complete healing gradually came.
We have had many healings since that time through our own work and with the help of patient and loving practitioners. Our son, when a small boy, had a healing of blood poisoning in his hand. His uncomplaining patience was an inspiration to us all. I will always be grateful for the complete absence of any fear while we were working out this problem.
The first healing resulting from my own work was that of plantar warts on our daughter's feet. They were large growths, which caused her much pain and made walking difficult. We have had healings in our family of heart trouble, the liquor and cigarette habits, and many more.
I am so grateful for the loving, patient practitioners who have helped us through the years, for the privilege our children have had of attending the Christian Science Sunday School. Today they are going on as loyal Christian Scientists, and our grandchildren are enrolled in Sunday Schools of Christian Science churches. Membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church and the great privilege of class instruction are added blessings for which I am grateful.— (Mrs.) Luella Raymond Smith, Grosse Pointe, Michigan.
