Signs of the Times
The Reverend Alvin D. Johnson in The Protestant Herald Denver, Colorado Prayer is a way of life; it is not a formula to get things.... I hope that Christians can lead the world in being sensitive to the needs and can bring a power to heal, redeem and help. I feel we have the power in our tremendous religion which we haven't really tried.
The Reverend Paul H. Coxe in the Elizabeth Daily Journal Elizabeth, New Jersey
Matthew's Gospel, chapter 4, verse 23, gives a beautiful, three-word compendium of the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ when He lived on this earth some 2,000 years ago. It reads thus: "And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people."
The three words I would draw to your attention are the words teaching, preaching and healing. These three picture the work that the Christ came to do, not only so many years ago, but also through the church down through the ages. ...Christ healed. Please do not try to minimize this work of the Son of God. He came to do this as much as He came to do anything else. By teaching about the kingdom, by preaching a message of salvation, Christ laid the stress upon the spiritual, that is true. This, however, does not lessen the truth of the fact that He also performed many miracles and healed all sorts of sicknesses and diseases.
From an editorial in the St. Charles Union St. Charles, Michigan
"It is impossible to mentally or socially enslave a Bible-reading people. The principles of the Bible are the groundwork of human freedom" [Horace Greeley]....
H. E. Humphreys Jr., chairman of the board, United States Rubber Company, [was] the national chairman for [the 1959] Bible Week observance.... Mr. Humphreys said, "There is no better guide, no better set of principles or source of inner strength than the Holy Bible. It's the answer for us as individuals, as a society, and as a world searching for the truth."
The Reverend Joseph R. Sizoo, S. T. D. in the Bible Society Record New York, New York
The Bible lights up the road to significance. Almost every page is aflame with the story of what man can do when he is willing to let God take possession of him. It is always saying, "Look what you can do with life when it is God-guided."
