The turning point in my life...
The turning point in my life came at a Wednesday evening testimony meeting in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. A young man told of his experience in becoming an earnest student of Christian Science and of his joy in studying the weekly Lesson-Sermon, found in the Christian Science Quarterly.
I had not departed from the teachings of Christian Science, but had always depended upon Christian Science practitioners for help when away from home or in difficulty. As I listened to the testifier, I found myself fervently wishing I could feel that way too, and the angel message was, "You can."
I knew immediately that this was true, and from that moment I have enjoyed the study of the Scriptures and the Christian Science textbook, as well as all other authorized Christian Science literature. It was proof to me that, as our Leader says in the textbook (p. 1), "Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may he moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds." It was not long after this that I began demonstrating this truth for myself and became an active member of a branch church.
It has been my privilege to work out problems for my family without another's help. Some of the discords which have been overcome are those of measles, colds, inflammation, an ulcerous condition, tonsillitis, burns, fungus infection, headache, abdominal pain, influenza, membranous croup, organic infection, and the effects of falls. Also, when I have applied the truth, lost articles have been found.
One night our young son woke in great pain; the symptoms indicated a toxic condition. My thought turned immediately to God, divine Love, which is my inspiration and stay, and I was rewarded with these words from the Bible (Ex. 20:4): "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth."
In that moment I understood this to mean: Thou shalt not make unto thee the image of a mortal as the child of God, for the likeness of heavenly things is heavenly, not earthly. Thou shalt not make unto thee a likeness of the "earth beneath" and call it God's creation, and thou shalt not acknowledge the belief of a mortal mind or intelligent matter to be real, because it is opposed to Mind, God.
I opened the textbook to page 255 and read, "The human form, or physical finiteness, cannot be made the basis of any true idea of the infinite Godhead." I realized that I must turn from the false evidence before me. In minutes I was aware that the child was sleeping peacefully in my arms. The condition was healed, and there has been no recurrence of this belief.
I count among my blessings attendance in the Christian Science Sunday School and the uplifted feeling this attendance always gave me. I am grateful to those devoted teachers whose inspiration lifted my thought above mortal error and who were instrumental in my acquiring a genuine love for God.— (Mrs.) Marguerite A. Wilson, Portland, Oregon.
