Christian Science was introduced...
Christian Science was introduced to my parents when I was about ten years old. Since that time I have relied on its teachings to solve all problems.
The first Christian Science services that I attended were held in the home of students of this Science. I loved those services. The spiritual definition of "Church," given on page 583 of Science and Health, "The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle," was and has continued to be very precious to me.
A few hours after my first child was born I was suddenly attacked by severe pain all over my body. Just as suddenly came the thought, "Are you grateful for God?"
Indeed I was. I was grateful for God's love and for the understanding that His very presence and help surround me at all times. The pain quickly faded away, and the healing was complete. I am very grateful for this healing and for the many lessons which I learned from it.
The child mentioned, at the age of five, suffered periods of fever, coughing, weakness, and loss of weight. A doctor who attended him for some time at the request of my husband, who was not a Scientist, said that there was nothing else he could do and recommended that we send the child to hospital for observation. Faced with this prospect, I mentally rebelled and turned to God in prayer, asking to be shown what must be done.
Through the work of a Christian Science practitioner it was revealed that the divided thought in the home was not achieving a good result. I talked the subject over with my husband and told him of my earnest desire to rely on Christian Science treatment. He lovingly consented; so a letter was sent to the doctor telling him of this decision and thanking him for his kindness and help.
Within a short while the attacks lessened; then they completely disappeared, never to return. I am grateful for the practitioners who helped me during the dark days when discouragement and fear seemed great.
I am grateful for the privilege of having served as a First Reader in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. Soon after commencing in this office, I had a severe chill which resulted in a loss of voice. It was on a Saturday, and since I wanted to be in church on Sunday, I felt it was necessary to get in touch with a practitioner at once. She asked me to ponder these words from the textbook (p. 470): "Man is the expression of God's being." She also said that in being a Reader, I was evidencing the truth that God expresses Himself through His ideas.
I pondered this and claimed the benefits of Truth. I was able to be in my place the following day. By the next Wednesday, the whole condition was overcome.
I am grateful for the privilege of class instruction and for even activity connected with the Christian Science movement, particularly The Christian Science Monitor, whose outlook on world affairs is enlightening and helpful to all.
Daily I give thanks to God for His goodness in blessing me with a happy and harmonious home, health, and abundant supply.— (Mrs. Dorothy Julia Johnson, Peterborough, Northamptonshire, England.
