I should like to acknowledge a special feeling of gratitude for the good work of five members of The Mother Church who held informal Sunday services on the top floor of a county courthouse during the early 1940's. It was there that I was introduced to the order of service conducted by Christian Scientists. I was so impressed with the peace and quiet of the service that I knew that I would some day join a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and I did. Early in my experience I also had class instruction, from which I learned the importance of putting God first in my life, and I also learned how to use Christian Science more effectively. My husband also became interested in this Science.
In our home many ailments, such as measles, conjunctivitis, pinworm infection, earache, colds, indigestion, and influenza, have been mastered through the application of the truths of Christian Science. The healing of pinworm infection took place within six hours after we had called for the help of a practitioner. Sometime later there was a very slight return which was quickly corrected, and since then there has been no return.
The truth immediately declared that God is Mind and in Him there is no poison or acid prevented any reaction when a crystal of a powerful cleansing agent flipped into my eye. This chemical is considered so strong that one is not supposed to use it on sinks or tubs. I applied this same truth when our small son drank a laundry solution of bleach and water. He suffered no aftereffects.
A pair of summer sandals offered no protection one summer evening when mosquitoes bit my feet in many places while I was standing near a pool of water. Understanding that a mental feeling of imposition might underlie this intrusion, I denied the reality of such a belief in God's kingdom.
I then turned to "the scientific statement of being," given on page 468 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. When error whispered to my thought, "Apply a lotion," I said, "No, 'the scientific statement of being' has more healing in it than all the lotions and medicines in all the world, for it declares in part: 'There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all.'" Right after that all evidence of the bites left, and I was free.
This Bible verse from Psalms (121:8), "The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore," counteracted my fear of living alone in an unknown place for two weeks while I was having class instruction. I had never lived alone before.
For membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, for class instruction, and for all the work of our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in discovering and founding Christian Science so that all mankind may share and use it, I am indeed grateful.—(Mrs.) Catherine M. Wolfe, Derby, Kansas.
