One of the healings which I...
One of the healings which I have experienced in Christian Science and which stands out as a beacon to me took place in the fall of the last year of World War I. I had been a student of Christian Science for about a year at that time and was stationed in one of the large college camps where we had just about completed our training as maintenance units for army trucks.
An epidemic of influenza swept over our camp, and I was detailed as an assistant in one of the temporary hospitals. I had served there for two weeks when the symptoms of influenza presented themselves to me. I worked and prayed for a couple of days, but the condition seemed to get worse.
I had been allowed to stay on my cot in the barracks; but I managed to get up, make my way to the radio room, and send a message to a practitioner, asking for help in Christian Science. In a few days I was much improved, and before the end of the week I was released for duty and reported for drill with the rest of the company.
More recently when we were working on the company payroll in the office where I am employed, we needed items which were stored in boxes in the office stock room. The office boy was out on an errand, and I volunteered to get what was needed. It was necessary to walk through the first building of the plant into the second building, where there was a stairway of twenty steps.
After I had secured the boxes, I turned to lock the door. Somehow, while trying to lock it and hold on to the boxes, I must have stepped too close to the edge of the top step, for I fell headfirst all the way to the bottom. As I lay there I kept declaring that I was not hurt. I also affirmed that "man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements. The Scriptures inform us that man is made in the image and likeness of God" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 475).
I got up from the floor, rather dazed but still holding to the boxes, and without much difficulty walked to the nearest rest room to clean up and brush off my clothes. In a few minutes I walked back to the office, thanking God every step of the way for His great love and care for His children.
It was necessary for me to hold steadfastly to the truth after I returned to my desk; but by the time I was ready to go home at the end of the afternoon, I was quite calm and free from any difficulty and very grateful for this protection and healing.
I wish to express my gratitude for the many healings that I have experienced through Christian Science since World War I, for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, and for class instruction.—Alfred J. Widman, St. Louis, Missouri.
