I feel impelled to offer my testimony...
I feel impelled to offer my testimony in gratitude to God for Christian Science.
When our elder son was twenty months old, he was struck by a fast-moving swing. The blow knocked the little fellow several feet, and he was injured about the mouth and face. I carried him inside and telephoned long-distance to a Christian Science practitioner, who had helped our family many times.
The practitioner told' me to hold firmly to "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 468) while caring for the child and not to allow myself to dwell on anything else, and he would take up prayerful work.
Five minutes after I had been declaring this statement, which begins, "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter," the childstopped crying and began to play. The bleeding stopped, and the lacerations closed, although there was considerable swelling and discoloration.
Later at supper, despite the appearance of his mouth, the little boy was happily eating. Three days later there was only a slight discoloration of the lip and gum, and in a few more days this disappeared. The teeth which had been loosened in the accident tightened again also.
Three summers ago this same boy, then six years of age, while playing in the ocean surf was stung by a fish which the lifeguard termed a very large Portuguese man-of-war. I was staying at a cottage with friends who were Christian Scientists, and although we prayed earnestly, the boy was in great pain.
At my request, a friend drove to a pay station and telephoned longdistance to a practitioner. Almost immediately the boy relaxed; and within a half hour he was free from pain, except for some local soreness in his legs, where he had been stung. This soreness completely disappeared in a day or so.
This boy recently had a great deal of difficulty in school socially, emotionally, and with his reading. Much prayerful work was done to no apparent avail. It was discovered that his vision was defective. He could discern print only when held about six inches from his eyes. With the assistance of a practitioner the boy's vision was corrected; he could see normally and enjoyed happy relationships at school.
I am grateful for a growing spiritual understanding of God and of His likeness, man, and for being freed in large measure from a possessive attitude toward loved ones. I am especially grateful for a better sense of purity, which is enabling me to cast off false appetites of one kind or another as I become aware of the need to do so. Christian Science means everything to me.— (Mrs.) Margaret G. Scherer, Silver Spring, Maryland.
