I first heard of Christian Science...
I first heard of Christian Science at the office to which I went on leaving school. I shall ever be grateful to the one who, through her own splendid example and character, attracted me to the study of Science, which has given me a better understanding of God as omnipresent and omnipotent Love, Mind, and Principle, and of man, made in His image and likeness, and therefore inseparable from Him.
When I have used this knowledge, I have been immeasurably helped. Business problems have been solved, and I have been comforted and sustained when loved ones have passed on.
I have been protected in various ways, particularly during the war years when our house was completely destroyed a few moments after my mother and I had left it. We were unharmed. As I looked at the space where the house had been, wonderful promises from the Bible came pouring into my consciousness, including: "Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations" (Ps. 90:1), "Fear thou not; for I am with thee" (Isa. 41:10), and, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want" (Ps. 23: 1).
Also, these passages from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy came to me: "We bury the sense of infinitude, when we admit that, although God is infinite, evil has a place in this infinity, for evil can have no place, where all space is filled with God" (p. 469), and, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (p. 494), and many of the hymns. I knew with certainty that nothing good and real can be lost or destroyed. In the midst of the confusion all round, I experienced right there a deep sense of peace and comfort which I was afterwards able to convey to my mother.
Immediately we received the supply of right ideas which sustained us all through the ensuing years, and we did not lack anything we needed. In wonderful ways we were cared for. Within a month of the destruction of our house, we were able to rent another one. Also during this period, a great burden of false responsibility and of fear of lack was lifted, and I gained a greater sense of freedom.
I have had many physical healings, including those of influenza, bad headaches, nervous exhaustion goiter, sprained ankle, and colds. Some have been instantaneous. However, a very painful condition of the back persisted for over two years. I had help occasionally from a Christian Science practitioner. Although the condition improved, it kept recurring;. Many lessons were learned, and finally when I realized that God, not any particular person, is my support, the healing came.
My mother at one time broke her thighbone and was taken to hospital, where she was told that the bone might not knit together. Then gangrene set in in her foot, and the surgeon first said it would have to be removed; but afterwards he concluded that the entire leg would have to be amputated. Because she had witnessed my healings she decided to ask for help in Science for herself.
Intense pain was quickly overcome when the practitioner began to work, and my mother asked to be sent home. This the surgeon agreed to. On returning home, she made rapid progress through the consecrated work of the practitioner. One morning we noted that in place of one of the diseased toes a tiny, perfectly formed new one was growing. The same thing happened to the other toes, and they all eventually grew to the normal size. The whole foot and leg were completely healed. She was able to walk normally again. We were grateful to the practitioner and the kind friends who supported us by their prayers during this experience.
Words are quite inadequate to express all that Christian Science means to me. Daily I receive evidence of God's abundant love and care. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church and for the privilege of class instruction.— (Mrs.) Elsie May Busby, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.
