Never Too Young
[Of Special Interest to Young People]
One is never too young to practice Christian Science. The ability to put into practice the teachings of Christian Science is not necessarily dependent upon the number of years one has studied it.
Those who have taught in the Christian Science Sunday School have heard of demonstrations over sickness and discords of various kinds which the children have made. Many young people, with their simple faith and steadfast trust in God's ability to heal, have quickly proved the allness of God, good, and the nothingness of error. They have accepted undoubtingly as fact the statement made by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health (p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need."
It is recorded in the Bible that Christ Jesus, when he was twelve, was found in the temple listening to and questioning the doctors and astonishing them with his understanding (see Luke 2:46, 47). Later, after he had begun his healing ministry, he indicated that he wanted his adult followers to be childlike.
In Mark it is recorded (10: 13-15): "They brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein."
A pupil in a Christian Science Sunday School, together with the other members of his class, was invited to his teacher's home one afternoon. She lived near a large body of water where a swimming party had been arranged. This pupil swam away from the rest of the group and soon found himself sucked into a whirlpool from which he could not extricate himself. He stopped struggling and began to know the truths of Christian Science which he had been taught in the Sunday School.
He remembered that God is the real Father and Mother and that since God is ever present and All-in-all, He was watching over him that very moment and tenderly caring for and protecting him. Then he remembered that God is divine Mind and that therefore the intelligence of the divine Mind was present to guide him in what to do to get out of the whirlpool.
Almost instantly he remembered that in starting a race in a swimming pool, he would get off to a fast start by pushing against the tiling with all his might. An angel thought told him to do the same thing here: to push his feet against the chained logs around which the whirlpool had formed, and, as he did so, he shot out into the clear and still water and was soon safely back with the others.
Mrs. Eddy deeply loved children and refers to them often in her writings. In Science and Health she enjoins parents to teach their children as soon as possible the truths of Christian Science in relation to health and holiness. She also tells us (p. 236): "Children are more tractable than adults, and learn more readily to love the simple verities that will make them happy and good. Jesus loved little children because of their freedom from wrong and their receptiveness of right. While age is halting between two opinions or battling with false beliefs, youth makes easy and rapid strides towards Truth."
God attaches no limits of immaturity to His children. They exist forever at the standpoint of completeness and perfection. This being true it follows that no matter what mortal mind may be saying about age, we can see all, children and adults alike, as they really are—heirs of all that is good and beautiful, expressing perfect purity, joy, and understanding. God's qualities are irrevocable. There is no reversal in God, the divine Mind.
A child or young person can exercise his divine right to prove that he is in reality one with God, good, and that he can never be separated from Him. In her Message to The Mother Church for 1900, Mrs. Eddy makes this emphatic statement, which can be said to sum up the thought of this article (p. 6): "A child can measurably understand Christian Science, for, through his simple faith and purity, he takes in its spiritual sense that puzzles the man. The child not only accepts Christian Science more readily than the adult, but he practises it."
