Gratitude impels me to share...

Gratitude impels me to share some of the healing experiences which have resulted from the study and application of Christian Science. Through the years when our children were growing up, there were many healings, including those of measles, mumps, chicken pox, whooping cough, impetigo, blood poisoning, sunburn, colic, and many others. I should particularly like to tell of two healings from which I feel I have gained much in the way of spiritual progress.

While sitting in an auditorium with my husband and a friend, I was taken with a heart attack. It was necessary to be helped out into the lobby. A Christian Science practitioner was quickly summoned, and he began declaring the truth as we learn it in Christian Science. The practitioner and a friend stayed with me until I could be taken home. Within two hours all distress disappeared, and I had a sense of complete freedom and dominion, which was manifested in several ways, not the least of which was the ability to stand alone.

A more recent healing took a few weeks to accomplish, and throughout the time I had the consecrated work of an understanding practitioner. I was visiting a friend in a city several miles from home when, in the night, I fell from a high bed and landed in a sitting position on the floor. Because of the extreme pain and the claim that my back had been badly injured, my husband and a friend who had had some nursing experience came to take me home. After two days at home it was decided that I should be taken to the Sanatorium of the Christian Science Benevolent Association at Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, for nursing care.

I spent a month at the Sanatorium, and during that time steady progress was made so that by the end of the second week I was able to sit in a chair without pain. One morning I realized that I was expecting to be in pain every time I moved. I saw then the need for greater obedience. The practitioner drew my attention to a verse in Psalms which reads (62:5), "My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him."

One evening, when walking, there was a strong tendency to favor one side because of pain and to limp. This was immediately handled by knowing that God's man is upright and perfect. The next morning I walked freely and without pain.

Later, I felt that there was an obstruction in one side of the abdomen. The promise expressed in Isaiah (45:2), "I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight," came to my thought. I accepted it with confidence. Instantly there was a change, a release. Not long after that there was complete freedom.

The wonderful care and loving thoughts of truth and the consecrated work of the nurses at the Sanatorium afforded me a great sense of gratitude. How grateful we can be that our Benevolent Associations provide such loving care for those who need it while overcoming physical difficulties!

My gratitude is greater than I can express in words for the many years it has been my privilege to serve in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, for the priceless experience of class instruction, and for the overcoming of many false traits of character. I am very grateful for our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for giving us this workable, provable Science of Christianity which teaches us how to serve our fellow men and so glorify God.— (Mrs.) Edith Hewett Donovan, Leesburg, Florida.
