Mrs. Eddy tells us in the textbook,...

Mrs. Eddy tells us in the textbook, Science and Health (p. 410): "Every trial of our faith in God makes us stronger. The more difficult seems the material condition to be overcome by Spirit, the stronger should be our faith and the purer our love." We had an opportunity to demonstrate this truth when we were expecting our first child.

The physician whom we had engaged in conformity with the laws of the state in which we then lived diagnosed a condition which he called "toxemia." The recommendation for medical treatment was refused, for we wished to rely entirely on Christian Science. During the week which followed this diagnosis, I gained eight pounds, and again medical treatment was urged. We realized then that we must take a firmer stand for Truth.

We worked earnestly with the practitioner who had been lovingly supporting us, and at the next examination it was found that there had been no further gain in weight. However, the physician told us that there was no longer any heartbeat from the child and that if I wanted to survive this experience, I must go to the hospital to have the delivery forced; and even then he would not guarantee success.

I am so grateful to say that we did not for a minute accept this verdict, but held to the words of Mrs. Eddy (ibid., p. 304), "This is the doctrine of Christian Science: that divine Love cannot be deprived of its manifestation, or object; that joy cannot be turned into sorrow, for sorrow is not the master of joy; that good can never produce evil; that matter can never produce mind nor life result in death."

We knew that all that was really going on was the unfolding of God's idea and that it would be revealed to us at the right time and in the right way, because God was in control, not medical laws. There was never any discomfort at any time, only the joyous awareness that God is All.

In a few days, attended by the doctor and a loving, helpful Christian Science nurse, I gave birth to the child in our own home as we had planned. He was alive and perfect in every way. The experience was completely harmonious, and there were no aftereffects; there was only renewed gratitude for this wonderful Science.

For all the blessings we have received and for the priceless privilege of class instruction, we are profoundly grateful.—(Mrs.) Louise Herot, Wilton, Connecticut.
