Space will not permit me to relate...
Space will not permit me to relate all the proofs of God's loving protection which have come to me through the study of Christian Science. The healings of an internal malignant condition, burns, pneumonia, influenza, mumps, and the smoking and drinking habits by the prayerful work of a member of the family were mentioned in my first testimony in the Sentinel of August 17, 1946.
My granddaughter was stricken with ear trouble. Her mother called a practitioner more than two thousand miles away; and the truth of Christian Science was voiced so clearly that it broke the fear of the parents, and the child was instantaneously healed.
An incident that I experienced might prove helpful to others. Upon entering a place of business where remodeling was going on, I stepped on a temporary step, one end of which was not nailed down, and I fell with my foot under me and broke two bones in my foot. But I walked a block to my home and called a practitioner for help. She asked me to study what Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health about accidents.
Two of the citations that helped me were these (p. 214): "Neither age nor accident can interfere with the senses of Soul, and there are no other real senses"; and (p. 397): "When an accident happens, you think or exclaim, 'I am hurt!' Your thought is more powerful than your words, more powerful than the accident itself, to make the injury real."
I drove the car the second day, and I went about my duties as usual. Since it was an insurance case, I was required to have an X ray, and it showed that both bones had been broken. The doctor wanted to set them, but I told him that it would not be necessary. Nor was it, for I was completely healed in Christian Science without medical aid.
The protection we have had when traveling across country by car has been outstanding. Before starting out, we have always made it a practice to read, among other things, the twenty-first, twenty-third, and one hundred and twenty-first Psalms. While riding along, we sing hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal.
In one instance we had just come down some rugged mountains when our timing gear gave out. Only a short distance away was a radio power station which had the only telephone for miles. A garage was called, and shortly we were towed back to the garage. Three men were put on the job, and in six hours we were on our way.
I think the greatest compliment I ever received was from our daughter when she called me long-distance to say to me; "Mother, you have given me to the greatest heritage a parent can give a child and that is the groundwork of my understanding to live and practice Christian Science."
I wish to take the opportunity to express my gratitude for each practitioner who has helped me. I also express gratitude for our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, for the privilege of serving as First Reader in the latter, and for class instruction.—(Mrs.) Mary Gould Dunbar, Opelousas, Louisiana.
