It has been several years since...
It has been several years since I have expressed, through the periodicals, my gratitude for Christian Science healings. I have had several outstanding proofs of God's presence.
A most unusual demonstration occurred a number of years ago. We had recently moved from the windswept prairies in a midwestern state, where flowers have to struggle to live, to Oregon, where flowers grow in abundance. My joy was so great at the possibility of having my own garden that I at once put up a wire fence against which I planted sweet peas.
Our adjoining neighbor had a dry cleaning business and had been accustomed to hanging the garments on my line; therefore he was quite disturbed because of the fence. One afternoon I stood at my dining room window and saw him tear down the wire fence that held my plants erect.
At first my impulse was to be angry. But I corrected this impulse, knowing that anger had never healed any situation. Then I began to know that man, made in the image and likeness of God, is gentle, loving, and understanding. I held firmly to this and would not allow its opposite to come into my consciousness.
When I awakened very early the following morning, it was with joy I found my fence and flower garden restored, and never a word passed between my neighbor and me concerning it. Love had conquered hate.
During this same time I also had demonstrations of supply, the first of which enabled me to have class instruction. Shortly after that I considered it necessary to go to work to help out financially. Since the only training I had ever had was in dressmaking and needlework, I decided to get a loan from the bank, buy a hemstitching machine, and open a shop in my home.
My getting the loan was of itself a demonstration, because I got it on my own note, with no other signature and at a time when a woman was considered a poor business risk. I was able to pay it back in monthly payments out of my income.
For more than a year my work prospered, but I had not foreseen what was called a vacation slump. At first I was rather fearful. Then I began to work the problem out as we are taught in Christian Science. I felt that my business was the result of prayer. And I knew that true business is in the reflection of God and is therefore continuous and successful; that no so-called vacation pause could interfere with my true work or my real income.
After declaring the truth in this way, I put my full trust and confidence in God's power. Within twenty-four hours my shop was stocked with orders, and the work continued without further interruptions.
Very often I have put my last dollar in the collection at church, but I always had whatever was needed for our welfare. I am grateful for all that has come to me through God's dear love and through my entire confidence that our protection in God is in proportion to our faith and understanding of Him. Mere words cannot convey my gratitude to Mary Baker Eddy for Christian Science.—(Mrs.) Aura C. Lyman, Clarkston, Washington.
