It is with deep humility that I...

It is with deep humility that I express gratitude for Christian Science and share, with the readers of the periodicals, healings which I have had through applying its truths. These healings took place while I was residing in Boston, Massachusetts, where I was studying music and where I also had the privilege of attending both the Sunday School and the services in The Mother Church.

The first experience I wish to relate is a healing of laryngitis. I was unable to speak above a whisper for two days. Since there was no attendant physical discomfort, I ignored the situation until the third day, when I was to have a piano lesson. Then it occurred to me that my teacher, who knew I was studying Christian Science, might discredit the healing power of Truth should I not be able to speak out loud.

Immediately I began to study the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I pondered deeply the truths from that week's Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. My thought was lifted to behold the allness of Spirit, God, and the consequent nothingness of error. With this uplifted thought, I knew I was healed. Then came the suggestion, "Try your voice and see whether or not you can speak." Just as quickly, I recalled Jesus' words when he was tempted in the wilderness (Matt. 4:10), "Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve."

With the spiritual conviction that the healing had taken place, I went to the Conservatory. As two friends approached me, I joyfully returned their greeting in a clear, natural voice.

On another occasion, I was instantaneously healed of severe headaches which had become periodic. I realized that because God is All and is eternally perfect, being is harmonious and therefore pain has no existence. Immediately the pain vanished, and there has never been a return of the headaches.

A third healing came as the result of the work of a Christian Science practitioner. I asked help for a physical discomfort. I was healed soon after that of the physical discomfort, but at the time I received an instantaneous healing of a hacking cough that had persisted and annoyed me for two years and for which I had not asked help.

As I accompanied the practitioner to the door after she had prayerfully worked for me, she quoted a passage concerning consumption from Science and Health (p. 425): "Show that it is not inherited; that inflammation, tubercles, hemorrhage, and decomposition are beliefs, images of mortal thought superimposed upon the body; that they are not the truth of man; that they should be treated as error and put out of thought. Then these ills will disappear."

A quick surge of anger filled my thought, and I vehemently replied. "I don't have tuberculosis." But apparently the quotation was just what I needed, for I never coughed again. Many years later, while teaching music in a public school, in compliance with a school requirement, I had a chest X ray. The photographer, on completing the film, remarked, "Everything is all right, but there are old scars."

These are only a few of many healings experienced over the years. Christian Science has taught me to replace unhappy, somber thoughts with thoughts of joy and gratitude, with an expectancy of ever-present good. It challenges me each day to lay aside a false sense of self for my true selfhood as a child of God. I have learned to know that God is an ever-present help in time of need.

Out of a grateful heart I give thanks to our loving Father-Mother God for our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, and for our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who gave Christian Science to the world.—(Mrs.) Marie Harker Marshall, Storm Lake, Iowa.
