When I was a small child I became...

When I was a small child I became ill. As my parents had only recently become interested in Christian Science and were fearful of my condition, a doctor was called in who diagnosed the case as diphtheria and stated that I would have to be moved to a quarantine station. He agreed to wait until the next morning before ordering the move. A Christian Science practitioner was asked for treatment for me, and this was lovingly given. Next morning the doctor was amazed to find me happily playing and completely healed.

I think perhaps my first real appreciation of Christian Science came when I was a teen-ager in employment away from home in a small country town, and a sprained ankle was healed in a few minutes. This was accomplished as "the scientific statement of being" from page 468 of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, was fervently and understandingly held in consciousness. This statement declares in part: "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all."

Since the other occupants of the house were rather antagonistic to what the imagined Christian Science to be, medical treatment would undoubtedly have been summoned had not the truth overcome the difficulty so swiftly.

That "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (ibid., p. 494) has been proved on many occasions. Lost articles have been recovered; lack in main forms has been overcome; burns from boiling water and fat have had no effect when the omnipotence of God was instantly acknowledged.

Deafness, poor eyesight, warts, chilblains, corns, and pains in the chest are some of the other conditions that have been overcome, generally by my own understanding of Truth. However, whenever the help of a Christian Science practitioner has been requested, it has been lovingly and very patiently given.

On page 210 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" by Mrs. Eddy we read under the caption "What Our Leader Says": "Beloved Christian Scientists, keep your minds so filled with Truth and Love, that sin, disease, and death cannot enter them. It is plain that nothing can be added to the mind already full."

This was proved one afternoon during a severe storm. While I was watching some blinding lightning, the thought came that perhaps the house would be struck. Instantly this thought was destroyed by my realizing that God is the only true power, the only presence, and that He is All-in-all'.

I felt completely confident that this was true and therefore carried on my normal routine without further thought of the storm. Several hours later I was told that while milking during the storm, my brother, who had on hobnailed boots instead of the customary rubber ones, had been struck by lightning and flung on his back to the dairy floor. However, he arose unharmed. My fervent gratitude for this proof of the power and protection of Truth is most sincere.

I also wish to express gratitude for the consecrated practitioners, Sunday School teachers, and many friends who have helped me to gain a better and more practical understanding of Truth as explained in Christian Science.—(Miss) Joyce Lilian Webb, Mittagong, New South Wales, Australia.
