Some years before my family began...

Some years before my family began the study of Christian Science, I had been provided by a well-known eye hospital with glasses for an astigmatic condition.

After attending the Christian Science Sunday School for several months, I decided to become a Christian Scientist and wished to lay aside the glasses. An appointment was made with a practitioner, who asked me to study pages 390 to 420 in Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy. I remember her telling me that if I would always look for only what God makes, I should have no trouble seeing it.

When I returned home, my parents gave me permission to remove the glasses, and I have never worn them again. Since that time my eyes have passed rigorous military examinations and have served through graduate work, which often required eight hours of uninterrupted reading. I now teach, and I read without discomfort the highly individual handwriting of the students.

Over the years I have relied exclusively upon Christian Science for healing and protection. While overseas during the Second World War, I was instantaneously healed of loss of voice when I refused to cancel an appointment to sing at nondenominational Protestant services held at a military post. I held to the fact that neither a disease nor a false belief can interfere with man's reflection of God's joy in His creation. The first vocal sound I made that day was the first note of the solo. The voice was normal.

A painful and crippling condition in my back was healed with the help of a Christian Science practitioner. We knew that man's right activity manifests the infinite, perfect activity of God and that because I am a spiritual idea, nothing can cripple or hurt me without first accomplishing the impossible feat of destroying divine Principle, God, whose expression I am. This healing required several weeks, because my thought was clouded by much fear and impatience, which needed to be overcome.

One day, while praying earnestly, I felt a conviction that the healing was accomplished, although the physical manifestations seemed unchanged. I went joyously about my work, and the next time I thought of the difficulty a loved one was protesting my running downstairs carrying a sixty-pound tape recorder. I was completely free. When I telephoned the practitioner, we discovered that at the same time I had realized that the healing work was accomplished, she had felt a joyous conviction that I was healed.

Many other difficulties such as colds, sinus trouble, accidents, and financial and personal problems have been healed through prayer in Christian Science. I am very grateful for our textbooks, the Bible and Science and Health, and for our churches, practitioners, and teachers.—Hugh Pendexter III, Yankton, South Dakota.

It is with great pleasure that I verify the healing of my son of astigmatism. It was a wonderful healing to witness and has been a permanent one. His faith was so great that it completely allayed any feeling of insecurity which his father and I might have had.

At the time, his father was not particularly interested in Christian Science, and my family were much opposed to our letting the child remove his glasses. However, it was done as he wished, and the healing took place almost at once.— (Mrs.) Ruth H. Pendexter, Hilltown, Pennsylvania.
