My first testimony was published...
My first testimony was published in the Sentinel for September 9, 1905. Since that time I have been learning to know the truths of Christian Science and striving to live them. I can now add to my first testimony several accounts of healings, some of which are outstanding.
One morning I got up feeling very ill. I tried to go on with my work as usual, but throughout the day the sense of pain seemed to increase until my whole body was affected. I had had similar attacks before, but never so severe. As there was no relief from the pain, I decided it was an occasion to request the help of a Christian Science practitioner.
I turned to the list of practitioners in The Christian Science Journal, but by the time I had selected a name, I could not read the telephone number or hold the telephone receiver. A familiar quotation from the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, kept repeating itself to my thought. Only parts of the quotation were clear, but I pondered them. I think my healing began then, for soon I was able to lift the textbook to my lap and turn the pages to the reference I needed.
I found the complete quotation, which says (p. 598): "One moment of divine consciousness, or the spiritual understanding of Life and Love, is a foretaste of eternity. This exalted view, obtained and retained when the Science of being is understood, would bridge over with life discerned spiritually the interval of death, and man would be in the full consciousness of his immortality and eternal harmony, where sin, sickness, and death are unknown."
I read this passage several times and then, with assurance of safety, turned out the light and went to sleep. When I awoke, there was no more pain. I felt completely rested and had such a feeling of well-being that it was like an entire renewal. This healing occurred eleven years ago. There has never been a return of the trouble.
A more recent healing was that of a large abnormal growth. When the condition first appeared, I decided to trust Christian Science for healing and to have no other treatment, regardless of the outcome. For some months I had the help of a Christian Science practitioner, and I was enabled to carry-on official duties in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist.
I became conscious of my ability to think rightly, to know God as infinite Love and myself as His likeness. Improvement in the physical condition began at once and continued until the fear was removed, the pain destroyed, and the growth dissolved. The healing has been permanent.
I am grateful for the inspiration, instruction, and encouragement which I have gained through the Christian Science periodicals and through the Christian Science Hymnal. I am also grateful for other physical healings, for guidance and protection, and especially for the privilege I had of serving the Cause in Boston, Massachusetts. (Miss) Effie J. Fletcher, Pacific Grove, California.
