Having for many years enjoyed...
Having for many years enjoyed the helpful testimonies published in the periodicals, I should now like to add my grateful thanks for all that Christian Science has meant to me all through my life.
My mother had a wonderful healing over thirty-five years ago after having been told by several doctors that she would be an invalid for life. Since she had two young children to bring up, this situation was a very desperate one. In her extremity she turned to Christian Science for help and was completely healed by the practitioner who came in response to her call.
My sister and I had the privilege of attending the Sunday School, and the truths I was taught there have been a constant guide to me in school, in business, and in the Armed Forces as a member of the Women's Royal Naval Service during World War II.
I have had so many instances of protection, guidance, and supply that it would be impossible to relate them in one testimony. However, one instance stands out particularly clearly. It was during the war, and I was stationed at a large naval base. One day, without any warning, a ship carrying a load of TNT had a collision and exploded. It was necessary for all our Wren personnel to be evacuated to a place of safety. This evacuation worked out most harmoniously, in spite of the fact that we were taken completely unawares.
All the time I was holding to the truths that had helped me in the past. I knew there was only one power, which was that of God, and therefore peace and order must prevail. At no time did I have any sense of fear.
Sometime later an officer told me that at the height of the episode I was heard to say in a loud voice, "Keep calm; all is well." I had no recollection of expressing this thought aloud, but it certainly was in my consciousness. The person who related this to me said that at once they all felt I knew what I was saying, and they settled down peacefully for the night. I am so grateful that in some small way I was able to demonstrate the truths I had known for so many years.
Before closing I should like to express gratitude for the healing of a sense of separation when a loved one passed on and for all the loving encouragement given by fellow church members at this time. My thanks also go out to the friends I met in the United States when I had the privilege of visiting there during the war.
Words cannot adequately express the gratitude I feel to Christ Jesus, who is our Way-shower, and to Mrs. Eddy, who has made his teachings so plain that all may prove the statement (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."—(Miss) Elisabeth Hartland, London, England.
