One of my earliest experiences...
One of my earliest experiences in Christian Science has remained a constant source of inspiration to me. For many years prior to my study of this Science, there had been a growth in my throat. Finally I consulted a specialist, who advised surgery for its removal, and I submitted to a minor, though painful, surgical operation. Within a year the growth reappeared, and it was just as large and disturbing as before the operation.
It was during that year that I became a student of Christian Science; so I asked a member of my family for Christian Science treatment. A few days later I looked at the throat and found no trace whatsoever of the growth. This healing took place fourteen years ago and has remained permanent.
Another wonderful healing occurred after I had experienced a severe attack of a chronic heart difficulty of twenty years' standing. In my early teens it was found that I had an alarming heart condition, and I spent several months in bed under constant medical care. The condition became less acute, but was not healed. During the next twenty years I grew so accustomed to it that when I became a student of Christian Science it did not occur to me to apply to this condition the truth I was learning.
Finally there came a time when I saw my need. Late one night as I was reaching for a glass in the cupboard, I lost consciousness so quickly that I was not even aware of falling. As I regained consciousness I felt that I was actually fighting for my life. I was able to call to my husband, who helped me to bed.
A Christian Science practitioner was called and treatment requested. During the next few hours there were several times when I thought I was passing on. My husband sat by my side declaring the truth audibly, and when I was sufficiently free to sit up, he read aloud to me the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly. I was able to retire for the night, and I slept soundly. The practitioner continued working for me, and although I slept nearly all of the next day, the morning of the third day I arose completely healed.
Not only was the emergency taken care of, but I was healed of the entire belief of heart trouble. Words cannot describe the freedom and glory of that awakening and release from bondage. I thought of the experience of Peter which is related in the twelfth chapter of Acts. Like Peter, I had been bound with chains and in prison, but "a light shined in the prison," and the "chains fell off."' The healing has remained permanent.
How grateful I am for Mary Baker Eddy and for her establishment of the Church of Christ, Scientist, through which all may drink of "the water of life freely" (Rev. 22:17). Through the work of devoted practitioners, the inspired Christian Science periodicals, the individual study of Science and Health, and class instruction, I have partaken of this "water of life." Truly Christian Science heals, and I know it!—(Mrs.) Virginia W. McClain, Louisville, Kentucky.
