During the past fifty years, I have...
During the past fifty years, I have reaped the glorious benefits of the teachings of Christian Science. For the encouragement of all earnest seekers and for my own advancement, I now wish to contribute my testimony through our publications.
My first healing was that of fallen internal organs, which caused such distress that our physician could only prescribe opiates and recommend an operation. In my distress I gratefully accepted the advice of a dear friend to try Christian Science. There was no practitioner in our city at that time; so this friend kindly wrote to a practitioner in a distant city, asking her to help me. An instantaneous and permanent healing resulted.
The first letter I received from the practitioner spoke of the day and hour she began to work. They coincided with the exact day and hour that I had ceased to be fearful. I eagerly began to clean the house. Later in the day, after strenuous house cleaning, I realized I was free from suffering, and that was the last of the difficulty.
The relief and joy that came with the healing is to this day beyond description. The practitioner sent me my first copy of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, and told me how to study the Bible with it. I searched with all my heart to find what had cured me. Now I know it was the Christ-healing, revealed in Science and Health.
Through the years I have had proofs of God's power not only in freedom from diseases, in the healings of a misplaced vertebra and a broken bone in my hand, but in overcoming sorrow and limitation. With the help of a practitioner, I was healed of weakness and weariness. I had reached a state of mind in which I did not care to struggle on. The practitioner awakened me by declaring that we do not abandon our bodies, but through the power of Christ, Truth, we heal them. This truth set me free.
I am grateful for class instruction and the yearly association meetings, as well as for having been able to assist in the organization of a Christian Science Society, which later became a church. I am most grateful for our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and for our literature,—(Mrs.) Sarah M. Lewis, Bucyrus, Ohio.
