The first healing I experienced...

The first healing I experienced through the study of Christian Science was one of chronic constipation and stomach trouble. This condition was so much a part of my experience that I had not even mentioned it to the practitioner on whom I called for guidance in beginning the study of Christian Science. I had taken medicine every night for as long as I could remember.

In talking with me the practitioner recommended that I empty my medicine cabinet of all material remedies and rely absolutely on God. That night I emptied all the bottles of medicine and threw the boxes of pills into the incinerator. Some time later I realized that I was healed; for I was able to eat anything without suffering, and there was no more bloating of my stomach.

I told this to the practitioner, and we both rejoiced over the healing. Then I asked her how this came about when there was no treatment given for that particular problem. She referred me to what Mrs. Eddy says in her book "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 9), "The spiritual power of a scientific, right thought, without a direct effort, an audible or even a mental argument, has oftentimes healed inveterate diseases." Here was definite proof that healing is the natural result of spiritualized thinking.

Some time later our youngest son manifested symptoms of asthma. One night he experienced a severe attack, and I called the practitioner. She lovingly assured me that all would be well and took up the work. About one o'clock in the morning, I called her for about the fourth time that night and tearfully told her that our son was passing on.

She replied, "When you called earlier in the evening, you expected a healing, didn't you?"

I answered that I certainly did.

Then she said: "Well, I have done a lot of good work, and I feel that the healing has taken place. Now, let's thank God for that healing."

I sat for a few moments overwhelmed with self-pity, for I found it hard to thank God for something I could not see. But I knew that God had been good to us through the years and would not fail us now; so I thanked Him for His goodness and wonderful love. Then I went into the boy's room. He was asleep and breathing normally. Words cannot express the joy and gratitude I felt at that moment.

The next day we visited the practitioner. She told me that it was I who had needed to be healed and that I must learn to release our children from the fears I was entertaining and to stop watching for error to manifest itself in the form of asthma or any other condition. I did a great deal of work with the Concordances to the Bible and to Mrs. Eddy's writings, and finally I was able to loose the children. There has not been another attack of asthma in the fifteen years since then. This healing has been a blessing through the years, and it sustained us when our sons were away from home, serving their country.

I am so grateful for our practitioners, who stand ready to support and help us. Membership in The Mother Church, the privilege of serving in a branch church, and an enlarged understanding of God through class instruction have increased my appreciation of Christian Science. It is all the name implies, the Science of Christianity, as taught by our Way-shower, Christ Jesus. And I am so grateful to Mrs. Eddy for sharing her discovery with all mankind.—(Mrs.) Ella A.
