When I was sixteen years old, a...
When I was sixteen years old, a cousin whom I was visiting was seized with a very painful abdominal condition. She requested that I read aloud to her from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Just a few moments after I had finished reading, she arose from her bed and went into the kitchen. When I went in, I found her doing some chores and singing. I was pleased and wondered how such a great change could take place in so short a time, but I did not question her.
A few years later, after a major operation, I was suffering and could get no help from physicians. I was confused, could not sleep properly, and felt very nervous and without hope. At a sanatorium where I was having special baths, massages, and diet, I was advised by a friend to try Christian Science. The seed had been sown in the experience with my cousin in earlier years, and as I recalled her healing I knew that Christian Science was just the thing for me.
An appointment was made with a practitioner, and I gratefully accepted the truths he gave me. The result was an instantaneous healing. When I left his office, I felt as if I were walking on air. I slept soundly after that time and was very soon taking a secretarial course, which led to an office position.
From early childhood I had periodic sick headaches, which deprived me of much pleasure and comfort. From early morning until late at night I was bothered by pain and extreme nausea and was unable to be out of bed or to eat any food during those hours. One day I was quite disappointed when, because of a headache, I could not fill a dinner engagement. I prayed earnestly, knowing the truth that man's birthright is dominion. Within the hour I was free from pain and felt only a slight nausea. When a tray of food was brought into the room, I felt I could eat anything without ill effects, I realized I was entirely free, and I have never had a return of either the headaches or the nausea. This healing took place more than forty years ago.
While I was lighting a gas heater, the flame caught my soft dressing gown and flannel sleeping garment. I used my hands to put out the flames and suffered deep burns on my left hand. When the shock was over, I felt a very severe throbbing pain. I thought I should call a practitioner, but I did not do so, for I did not want to alarm my companion, who is not a Christian Scientist. Then I began to realize the comforting power of Mrs. Eddy's words on page 113 of Science and Health, "There is no pain in Truth, and no truth in pain."
Within a half hour there was no evidence of pain. I slept peacefully and used the hand normally the next day with no discomfort. In a very few days there was no sign of the burn. Two weeks after this experience I was healed of a painful abscess on a front tooth.
I am grateful for many other healings and for much protection since becoming a student of Christian Science, also for membership in The Mother Church and for a part in branch church activities, as well as for the blessed experience of class instruction.—(Mrs.) Sarah E. Mitchell, Winter Park, Florida.
