Writing my testimony is a joy...
Writing my testimony is a joy and a privilege. Christian Science has helped me and upheld me all my life, and I am deeply grateful to Mrs. Eddy for its discovery.
I have had many healings through Christian Science. An instantaneous healing of intestinal grippe, which had recurred for some time, impressed me deeply when I was a young girl. My grandmother, who was a Christian Science practitioner, declared the truth of my being as a child of God, and the intense pain stopped, just as though a water tap had been turned off, and I have never had a recurrence of this difficulty.
The most outstanding proof of God's guidance and healing in my experience took place at the birth of our younger son a few years ago. In the months before the little boy was born I had done much traveling in the Pacific area and was harmoniously led at every step by trusting in God. The words from Isaiah (40: 11), "He ... shall gently lead those that are with young," were always with me. Not long before the birth, my husband and I were led to a lovely home, which we chose for its peaceful atmosphere. Later we found that our landlady, who occupied the back apartment, was a very active Christian Scientist; so we were surrounded by much love and right thinking.
Two days before our baby was born I was told I would probably have to go to the hospital to have a Caesarian operation. A Christian Science practitioner quickly took up the work, and the Christian Science nurse who was attending me expressed much confidence. However, it was not until two days later, when I had given up all sense of self and was willing to do God's will, whatever that might be, without any outlining on my part, that the truth was proved supreme. The baby was born so naturally and quickly that the doctor did not even get to my home in time, and our son was delivered by the Christian Science nurse. Afterwards the doctor said to me: "You Christian Scientists! If I could only give my other patients what you have, I would really be helping them."
I am sincerely grateful for these and many other proofs of God's care, which my family and I have experienced. Our baby was completely healed of severe constipation through the persistent efforts of a practitioner. Both children have been healed quickly of injuries, colds, earache, and digestive disorder. The harmony and love in the relationship of the two boys, despite a difference of ten years in their ages, are a constant joy to me. The older one, David, named The younger one Jonathan, from a Sunday School lesson, and the love between them is as solid as between the two Bible characters of the same names. They have both benefited greatly from the Christian Science Sunday School.
I am grateful most of all for the overcoming of fearfulness, for the courage and strength gained through complete reliance on God, and for the progress made through class instruction and through serving as Second Reader in a Church of Christ, Scientist.—(Mrs.) Elsie Babcock Pearce, Collingswood, New Jersey.
With sincere gratitude to God for Christ Jesus, as well as for Mary Baker Eddy, I wish to corroborate the foregoing testimony of my wife. When I was a small child and had the whooping cough, my mother sang Mrs. Eddy's hymn beginning "Shepherd, show me how to go" (Poems, p. 14). I was healed, and ever since then Christian Science has blessed me with a harmonious sense of home.
For membership in The Mother Church, for the privilege of class instruction, for right activity, and for the privilege of serving as First Reader in a branch church, I am most thankful.
