My gratitude to God for Christ Jesus,...
My gratitude to God for Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, and for Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, is unbounded. My introduction to this religion came through The Christian Science Monitor just before World War I, when my husband and I were living in Canada. While I was searching the newsstands for a good American newspaper, a newsman recommended the Monitor.
We commenced to read it and learned to love it. Soon I began attending Wednesday evening testimony meetings in a Church of Christ, Scientist, and was greatly impressed by the love and sincerity of those who testified. I realized that Christian Science was the religion I wanted and had been seeking all my life.
After heavy financial losses and the sudden passing of a baby daughter, I found great comfort and peace of mind through branch church membership and activity. Membership in The Mother Church and class instruction added more light and spiritual understanding, which enabled me to pass through the dark days of World War II.
There have been many healings in our family. One night about midnight I awakened with alarming symptoms of heart trouble and felt that I was losing consciousness. I had presence of mind enough to dial the telephone number of a dear friend who was a student of Christian Science, and I asked her to help me. Soon I fell asleep, healed. There has been no recurrence of the difficulty.
Our boys all attended Sunday School from their early years. With the help of Christian Science they were enabled to go to college. I have experienced the healing of broken bones, a sprained ankle, and second- and third-degree burns.
A sense of loss and separation at the passing of dear ones during the war years was overcome. The Bible promise given by Christ Jesus states (John 14:16–18): "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you."
Our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, has also given us this blessed assurance (Science and Health, p. 55): "In the words of St. John: 'He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.' This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science." These promises have been fulfilled for me since I have come to understand the truth of our Leader's words (ibid., p. 489), "Outside the material sense of things, all is harmony."
I am also most grateful for the privilege of serving the Cause of Christian Science through the channels of The Mother Church and its authorized branches.—(Mrs.) Kittie M. Graham, San Diego, California.
