THE DIVINE ARBITER
A GREAT peace comes to one when he learns that the Supreme Being is divine Love. The realization that omnipotent Love is our Father-Mother God, the Mind, the Life of the infinite universe, that nothing is left out of His omnipotent care, causes us to be fearless and to have a constant expectation of good.
Mortals believe that there are many reasons for discord; that there are many things that can keep one from harmony. This is why a mortal is fearful and expects evil rather than good to come into his experience. The attitude of one who knows that God, divine Love, is the only power is the exact opposite of this. Dwelling upon the nature of the one infinite cause as entirely good, he does not accept the mortal belief that sickness, sin, and lack are a part of his life. He sees good as normal and thus experiences good.
"Arbiter" means one who has "absolute power of judging and determining." One student of Christian Science has been greatly blessed by realizing that God, Love, is the divine Arbiter. Thinking of this truth when error was suggesting that something bad was going to come into his experience, he has been lifted above animal magnetism—the belief in the reality of evil—and instead of the operation of evil, much good has come to him. He has learned to start each day with the realization that because divine Love is the Arbiter, he would experience only good that day.
God alone is in authority. Turning often to the fact that divine Love is the power of the universe, one gains a sense of dominion. Realizing that the Arbiter is all harmonious Spirit, one is superior to the belief that life, substance, and intelligence are material. Since all error rests upon this belief, the recognition of the omnipotence and omnipresence of Spirit brings freedom.
Many in Bible times proved that the realization of divine Love as the Arbiter changed what seemed a disastrous experience into a glorious proof of the power of divine Love to care for its own. Daniel was put into the lions' den. His trust in Love as supreme over all proved that evil has no control over God's man. The three men cast into the fiery furnace showed that trust in the fact that God, infinite good, is in authority annuls the supposition that man can be destroyed.
Christ Jesus' ministry of three years was a proof that God is the Arbiter of the universe. His demonstrations set aside every claim that error presented in its effort to prove that it is power. Its supposed law, which resulted in claims of blindness, deafness, sickness, lack, and other discord, was shown to be false when the Master freed those who had accepted these beliefs. He proved that the laws of perfect sight, perfect hearing, health, and abundance were the decrees of the divine Arbiter.
On two occasions the Bible says that Jesus went through the midst of the multitude and was not harmed. When he was ready, he allowed himself to be taken captive and to be crucified. His overcoming of death for himself was the supreme proof that divine Love is the Arbiter.
Many students of Christian Science, realizing that divine Love is the only cause, have proved that although error seems to present a picture of sickness, lack, and trouble, the harmony of man cannot be disturbed.
God alone can determine, for God is the only cause. Seeing this, the Psalmist wrote (Ps. 62:11), "God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God." Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who accomplished so much through her knowledge of Love as the only cause, says in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 473), "God is everywhere, and nothing apart from Him is present or has power." As we accept the glorious fact that Love alone has the power to determine things for us, we face each day with a great expectation of good.
God is omniactive Life; therefore what God is doing is all that is actually being done. God is the all-knowing Mind; therefore what God is knowing is all that is being known. There has never been and can never be an activity or a consciousness apart from God. This realization lifts one above the memory of seeming past discord, heals whatever seems wrong at present, and causes one to contemplate the future with a sense of joy.
In the book of Daniel we read (4:35), "He doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?" Isaiah likewise saw God as the divine Arbiter, for he wrote (14:24-27): The Lord of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand. ... For the Lord of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?"
These statements were proved in the experience of a student of Christian Science. At one time severe criticism was voiced about the manner in which he was managing a business. He felt it was wise for him to give up the management. But evil seemed to do other things to him. He became ill and had to use crutches in order to walk.
Turning more earnestly to the fact that Love is All-in-all, the student realized that Love is the Arbiter. The crutches were laid aside, and he was healed. It was acknowledged that his management of the business had been correct. He resumed his position. Then a great blessing came—he was elected to serve as a Reader in Church of Christ, Scientist.
His recognition that Love is in control and that therefore Love's design was operating set aside the suppositional activity of evil. Each one who accepts the fact of the allness and omniaction of Love can prove, when evil in the form of sin, sickness, or lack seems to come into his experience, that evil is not the arbiter, but that Love's design of eternal harmony for its children is ever in operation.
"He ruleth by his power for ever" (Ps. 66:7). Divine Love, the Principle, the Life of the infinite universe, is ever in control. God's purpose is ever being carried out. So nothing can disturb the harmony of man, beloved child. As Mrs. Eddy writes in "No and Yes" (p.26), "God holds man in the eternal bonds of Science,—in the immutable harmony of divine law."
Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is
within me, bless his holy name. Bless the
Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who
healeth all thy diseases.—Psalm 103:1–3.
