Our family has experienced...
Our family has experienced many healings through the application of Christian Science. The conditions healed include pneumonia, a chipped bone, colitis, colds, and sprains. Two healings were instantaneous. It is about these that I should like to be specific.
One day while standing on a ladder to take a screen down from its storage place above some beams in a garage, I lost my balance as the screen was lowered, and my left arm and shoulder were wrenched. In a very casual way I said, "I can't be hurt." On page 83 of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy states, "Nothing is more antagonistic to Christian Science than a blind belief without understanding, for such a belief hides Truth and builds on error."
A short time later, as we were eating dinner, I discovered I could not lift my left arm. After dinner I excused myself and went into the living room alone, wondering just what I should do, since I was very new in Christian Science. As I was contemplating spiritual facts, our son came into the room and asked me to help him with his Sunday School lesson. It included the story of Christ Jesus' raising of the daughter of Jairus from death.
The account of this story in Luke (8:51-54) relates: "When he came into the house ... all wept, and bewailed her. ... And he put them all out."
Our son and I discussed this process of putting out thoroughly. We concluded that a mere physical putting of people out of a house had no power to heal, but that Jesus must have also put out of thought pictures of tumult, weeping, wailing, sin, sickness, and death, and replaced them with thoughts of Life, Truth, and Love. With the belief of death annihilated, the daughter of Jairus arose, healed. Our son was satisfied with this explanation and went away happy. Ten minutes later I found myself using both arms vigorously, and I knew that I was healed.
When I arose one morning, one leg was very painful. I studied the Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly and started off to work. I had to do considerable driving, and the leg continued to hurt. At one time the severe pain necessitated my pulling the car to the side of the road while I did prayerful metaphysical work. There was some temporary relief, but when I arrived home later in the afternoon I was none the better.
A new issue of The Christian Science Journal had come in the mail, and I sat down and began to read it. The writer of the article to which I opened stressed the point that each individual must identify himself with the Christ now. On page 333 of Science and Health we read, "Throughout all generations both before and after the Christian era, the Christ, as the spiritual idea, —the reflection of God,—has come with some measure of power and grace to all prepared to receive Christ, Truth."
I silently declared my spiritual relationship to Christ and affirmed that I was receptive to Truth. While I was doing this, the telephone rang. I put down the Journal and answered the telephone. After I had hung up the receiver and started doing something else, I found myself healed completely.
I am grateful to God for Christ Jesus, as well as for Mrs. Eddy and the whole Christian Science movement, with its many opportunities for spiritual growth.—Ralph E. Kaiser, Upper Montclair, New Jersey.
