The healing of a severe rash on...

The healing of a severe rash on my legs was an experience which proved to be a waymark for me during my study of Christian Science. The condition manifested itself gradually, and thinking it was due to insect bites, I was inclined to ignore the situation.

However, the evidence grew more aggravated and to the point where I was unable to wear hose. Then I did specific work to eliminate this inharmony. There appeared to be no improvement, and during the second week the irritation became almost unbearable. One night I felt that my understanding of Christian Science was unable to take me any further. I cried aloud in despair, "Oh, God, what is the answer?"

The answer came instantly as I thought of a line from Hymn No. 412 in the Christian Science Hymnal, "The Christ is here, all dreams of error breaking." Each word stood out to me, and the presence and power of the Christ-consciousness flooded my thinking. The dream of error did indeed break as I realized that the presence of the Christ, Truth, nullifies every claim of error. I saw that I had allowed many petty irritations at myself and at others to accumulate and reside in my consciousness.

Further illumination followed when I realized the necessity of being unfailingly obedient to Mrs. Eddy's instructions entitled "Alertness to Duty" in the Manual of The Mother Church (Art. VIII, Sect. 6). Within a short period of time the physical condition was completely healed.

This experience was outstanding to me because of the immediate answer to my prayer. Some time after this healing, my attention was called to the following statement from "Christian Healing" by Mrs. Eddy (p. 6): "I saw how the mind's ideals were evolved and made tangible; and it matters not whether that ideal is a flower or a cancer, if the belief is strong enough to manifest it." Farther on Mrs. Eddy says, "The belief that produces this result may be wholly unknown to the individual, because it is lying back in the unconscious thought, a latent cause producing the effect we see."

How fortunate I feel that an alert business acquaintance presented Christian Science to me several years ago during a time of great need. It has been to me a gift such as that referred to by James when he said (1:17), "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights." Membership in The Mother Church and a branch church and class instruction have presented opportunities for spiritual growth. I am grateful to our Father-Mother God for His abundant provision for all our needs.— (Miss) Elsie Mary Gergely, Chicago, Illinois.
