During forty-three years of experience...
During forty-three years of experience in Christian Science, including nearly six years in the Army, where I served in this country and overseas, I have been wonderfully protected from accident. Supply has been sufficient and constant, and various physical healings have occurred.
An outstanding healing took place while I was attending a business convention in Boston. Massachusetts. On the morning of the first day of the week I was seized with a severe backache, which was believed to be a sacroiliac condition. After dressing with extreme pain and awkwardness, I studied the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly and read from other Christian Science periodicals which I always carry when traveling. Upon examining my thinking to determine what needed to be corrected, I realized that more effective and constant protective work must be done. This work, of course, is our daily duty and privilege.
Later that day and during the next day I was able to visit a convenient ground-floor Christian Science Reading Room, where further prayerful affirmative thought was given to the perfection of man and to the denial of any characteristics of selfishness, envy, ingratitude, condemnation, and so forth. It was revealed that a sense of pressure and personal responsibility for my business progress needed to be overcome and to be replaced with more reliance on God's direction in order to gain a proper adjustment in business and physical problems. Through this revelation and period of communion with God, additional comfort was experienced.
I politely declined offers of my associates who wished to extend medical assistance and mentally reversed their predictions of recurring physical disability. Meanwhile, a request for absent treatment was fulfilled by a capable Christian Science practitioner. Further progress was noted.
On Wednesday evening it was a privilege to attend the testimony meeting in The Mother Church. I listened more attentively than ever before to the healing selections that were read from the desk and to the testimonies. The truths of man's identity with God, good, brought complete relief by the following morning. The sacroiliac condition was eliminated, and I was grateful to be able to return to my convention duties. There has been no recurrence of the condition.
Throughout this experience, a helpful citation was with me from "Science and Health with Key tothe Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. It reads (p. 393), "Have no fear that matter can ache, swell, and be inflamed as the result of a law of any kind, when it is self-evident that matter can have no pain nor inflammation."
My progress in the Christian Science movement has been marked by my membership in The Mother Church, by service in branch churches, of which I have been a member at different times, and by class instruction. Healings which have occurred among the members of my family include those of colds, contagion, infection, and a tumor on the head. Sincere gratitude for Christian Science impels my daily desire to demonstrate more of the qualities of God, the divine Principle of being, as exemplified by Christ Jesus and as set forth by Mrs. Eddy.—Townley Axtell Ellington, Darien, Connecticut.
