On this program Mrs. Anne Adams of Chicago, Illinois, told of her own experience. The program was as follows:

Speaker: In the days of early Christianity, Christ Jesus and his followers comforted the sorrowing and reformed the wrongdoer. They reclaimed the outcast and healed the sick. And today, as always, the eternal truth he taught and lived is right here to help us—to be understood and utilized, to heal and bless. Our title is "The Gentle, Healing Christ," and our guest is Mrs. Anne Adams of Chicago, Illinois, whose experience illustrates what I've just said.

Would you tell us about your healing, Mrs. Adams?

Mrs. Adams: During most of my early life I felt very unwelcome in society. This was due to the fact that for several generations tuberculosis had been prevalent in my family. I remember being sent home from a party when I was only seven years old because I was the daughter of the man at the end of the block who was suffering from consumption. From childhood on, my own health grew steadily worse, and some years after I was married, the disease our family dreaded was observed in my case, too. In 1926 three physicians diagnosed my difficulty as valvular leakage of the heart and infected lungs, accompanied by a serious goiter condition. I learned later that two of these physicians had considered my condition to be hopeless.

Speaker: That must have been a discouraging prospect for you and your husband, Mrs. Adams. It must have looked as if there was no place to turn.

Mrs. Adams: Well, it did. But at this point my brother suggested that I try Christian Science, although he knew very little about it. He did know that there were Christian Science practitioners, but I don't think he knew very much about their work; and I certainly didn't.

I was willing to go see a practitioner, but strangely enough, I didn't go for the obvious reason of healing. I thought if the power of God could heal people, there must be a lot about God I didn't know. My health had been bad for so long—and now it seemed hopeless —so I didn't really think about healing. In fact, I didn't even mention my condition to the practitioner. I just wanted to hear what he had to say about God.

Speaker: Well, now, I'm sure we'd like to know some of the things you heard, because they undoubtedly had a great deal to do with what happened later.

Mrs. Adams: It was all completely new to me, but it was wonderful. I learned that God is eternal Life, infinite Love, divine Mind. The practitioner explained to me that man in his true selfhood is God's spiritual likeness. He told me that because God is Life, man in His image is perfect, strong, undying. Because God is infinite Love, man is the likeness of this Love, and therefore I could love all with whom I associated and be loved in return. He explained that since God is divine Mind, man is the likeness of this Mind and therefore reflects unlimited intelligence.

Speaker: And this, of course, was all a new understanding of God for you?

Mrs. Adams: Yes, and it was so logical and uplifting that I accepted it eagerly. When I came out of the practitioner's office, my sister-in-law, who had been waiting for me, said I looked like a new person. I was radiant and full of hope. From that time on, I began to study daily the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. And my physical condition began to improve immediately. I had been suffering fainting spells due to the valvular leakage of the heart. But this trouble disappeared right away. And within a year the tubercular condition was completely gone. Some time after that, a cousin, whom I hadn't seen for several years, called my attention to the fact that the goiter was gone.

An interesting confirmation of all these changes came in the 1930's when I applied for an insurance policy. I was given a thorough physical examination, and there was no sign of tuberculosis; the heart was perfect, and the goiter gone. I obtained a new life insurance policy without a question. In other words, my health was completely restored.

Speaker: I can understand what a wonderful sense of freedom this healing brought you, Mrs. Adams. But tell me, what about the feeling of being unwanted? Was that cleared up too?

Mrs. Adams: Oh, yes, that and so much more. I think I'm grateful most of all for the changes in character that have come. I've been freed of self-pity and a great deal of emotionalism. The old feeling of inferiority and timidity has been replaced with confidence and peace. Oh, I've had so many proofs that as we gain a correct understanding of God, our lives are uplifted and made happier, and we are healed, morally and physically.

Speaker: Mrs. Adams, we do thank you so much. What you've told us explains so eloquently what happens when the Christ, Truth, comes to our consciousness. The radiant truth, the truth concerning God and man in His likeness, was taught and lived and proved by Christ Jesus. And Christian Science reveals that it is still available, still to be found in the Master's teachings, still powerful to help and heal us when it is really understood.

Our guest has told us, friends, how this truth came to her—this understanding of God as divine Mind, Life, and Love and of man as His image and likeness. And how this brought her health and strength and renewal of life.

Speaking of this awakening to the truth concerning God and man, Mary Baker Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 230): "This awakening is the forever coming of Christ, the advanced appearing of Truth, which casts out error and heals the sick."

You see, as quietly and gently and as inevitably as daylight dispels darkness, so the truth concerning our real selfhood as the expression of God illumines our thought and removes fear, disease, despair. A sincere desire to know God better led our guest to this healing truth. From being unwanted in society, she was lifted into a sense of usefulness and happiness, because in divine Love there are no outcasts. Her health was restored, because there was no room for disease in a consciousness filled with Truth and Love. This same awakening, with its abundant blessings, is a present opportunity for you and me.

The Bible says, "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ." So the way to claim our heritage is to know more of the source of our inheritance, more of God. As we learn more of His true nature, we know more of His divine idea, Christ. And as this truth gently unfolds in our consciousness, we are healed.
