For the past twenty years I have been a student of Christian Science, and each year has found me increasingly grateful for the better understanding this Science is giving me of the ever-presence of God's love and healing power.

When my first aim was to acquire a better understanding of God, I was healed of all desire for smoking and social drinking. At the same time I was set free from the bondage of constant colds.

At one time I became seriously ill with influenza. In spite of constant study and prayer, I kept getting worse; so a practitioner was called. She lovingly explained to me that God, Love, is the only real power and influence in the universe and that His influence can result only in peace, harmony, and perfection. Within twenty minutes I arose from bed and went out to keep an appointment. A few hours later all traces of congestion completely disappeared.

I am grateful for the protection Christian Science gave me during the Second World War while I was spending three years in the Pacific theater, two and a half of them in the combat zones of New Guinea and the Philippines. Shortly after arriving in New Guinea, my feet and legs became covered to such an extent with a skin disease, known in the Army as "jungle rot," that I could barely walk. Also one ear became infected and lost its hearing. My study of the weekly Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly and my prayers did not correct these conditions.

While I was wondering whether I should have a medical examination, two questions suddenly came into my consciousness. The first was, "What can the doctor find out about you that God doesn't already know all about?" And the second was, "What can the doctor do for you that God cannot do better?" The only answer to both questions was, "Nothing."

Immediately all sense of fear and worry left me. I placed myself entirely in the hands of God, and with a great sense of freedom and joy I turned back to my study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

By the next morning I could walk a little better, and my hearing had partly returned. Four weeks later I was given a rigid physical examination for Officers Candidate School and was found to be in fine health. The healing was permanent, and though I spent two more years in the jungle, no disease of any kind ever again touched me.

Through Christian Science, the Christ, Truth, has protected our two children from nearly all childhood troubles. Our elder daughter, now thirteen, has had only mumps and measles, lasting about three days each. The younger daughter, nine years old, has had only tonsillitis. This was healed completely when we relied entirely on Christian Science.

I am deeply grateful to God. as well as to Christ Jesus, and to Mary Baker Eddy, who gave Christian Science to the world. Also I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, for class instruction, and for the joyful opportunity to serve as First Reader in our branch church.—Thaddeus C.
