Christian Science first came into...

Christian Science first came into my life over half a century ago, when I was a small child. Since then it has met my every need, physically, mentally, morally, and spiritually.

My first physical healing was that of asthma. This difficulty made it impossible for me to take active exercise like other children and made my early years very unhappy. I attended a Christian Science Sunday School and had treatment from the nearest practitioner, who was in another town. However, for some time there appeared to be no improvement at all in my condition.

One evening, after I had spent a week in bed with bronchitis, my stepfather, who was not a Christian Scientist, insisted that a doctor should be called to see me. My mother replied that if I were no better in the morning, she would send for a doctor. She then came to me and said we had just one night in which to prove that Christian Science heals the sick. She said that she would help me but that I must do my part by thinking as I had been taught to do in the Sunday School. At first a great sense of responsibility engulfed me, and I felt that our whole movement depended on my being a true witness of God's healing power!

Then I turned away from the thought of my body and was filled with a great desire to express God, not only in health but in every way and to understand and serve Him. The next thing I remember was my waking up the next morning entirely free. I have never had the slightest return of the disease since.

I have received many other proofs of the healing and sustaining power of Christian Science. Broken bones have been healed without surgical aid, diseases have been destroyed, and protection in accidents has been experienced. Since I received my first healing when I desired to give instead of receive, I feel that the way to express my great gratitude for all that Christian Science has done for me and the world is to pray each day that God will use me in His service. Our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, writes (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 150), "Then, in speechless prayer, ask God to enable you to reflect God, to become His own image and likeness, even the calm, clear, radiant reflection of Christ's glory, healing the sick, bringing the sinner to repentance, and raising the spiritually dead in trespasses and sins to life in God."—(Mrs.) Violet Carr Hall, Dorking, Surrey, England.
