I have had many proofs of the...
I have had many proofs of the practical value of Christian Science in everyday experience, and I wish to express my gratitude for numerous healings. One such healing occurred while I was en route to another city some two hundred and fifty miles from my home.
A friend and I had boarded a bus in anticipation of an enjoyable trip, but had not gone far when I was stricken with a feeling of dizziness and with poor respiration. Breathing was so difficult that I was rapidly losing consciousness. The sensation was frightening, but there was a sense of gratitude for the privilege of studying and practicing Christian Science.
With the hope of gaining relief through declarations of truth, I worked quietly and endeavored to manifest no outward sign of distress, since I did not wish to alarm my friend and the other bus passengers. I declared the supremacy of God's law and tried to realize that there is no reality in material law which claims to govern man and that man has his being apart from a material body. There came a glimpse of the truth that man lives in Mind, Spirit, and that he is independent of matter and its so-called laws. This understanding brought relief. Further prayerful work was done, and the situation cleared sufficiently to enable me to rest comfortably and enjoy the remainder of the trip.
I am grateful for the privilege of studying Christian Science. Through it I have been able to refute the evidence of the physical senses on many occasions. I have learned that all that is unlike God, good, is false and is not to be feared. Also, I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church and for class instruction; the latter was a wonderful experience. Just as I am more grateful for Christ Jesus as I learn more about his work and purpose, so I am each day more grateful for Mrs. Eddy and her great discovery.
I feel that this expression of gratitude would not be complete if I should withhold praise to God for release from the slavery of tobacco, tea, and coffee. I had smoked cigarettes for more than fifty years, and I had been a coffee drinker for nearly sixty years, having begun to drink it when I was a small boy.
For many years I thought of the cigarette habit almost as a part of myself and was unable to break away from it. At a Wednesday evening testimony meeting in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, a woman told of the experience of a man who was about to commit suicide because of despair over the cigarette habit. A student of Christian Science persuaded the man to abandon his suicidal intentions and try Christian Science; this he did and was healed.
When the testifier had finished I had lost most of my desire for tobacco, and within a very short time I was free. Now even the thought of tobacco is repulsive. I continued to drink tea and coffee until I had class instruction two years ago. I have not tasted either since.
For all these healings I am indeed grateful, and it is my desire so to live that I may do the work that will heal others as I have been healed.—Maurice Doody, McAlester, Oklahoma.
