In the Christian Science textbook,...
In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy says (p. 495): "When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought."
I am very grateful for a healing that I had several years ago. My family and I got off a bus and started to cross the street, not realizing that there was a car coming from the back of the bus. I was hit by the car and thrown quite a distance. When the police, an ambulance, and a doctor arrived, the police and the doctor wanted to rush me to a hospital, but my family, who had already requested help of a Christian Science practitioner, would not let me be taken. My mother, speaking privately to one of the officers, told him that we were Christian Scientists, and he said that he would not interfere with our religion. We were finally taken home in a police car.
The next morning the practitioner telephoned that I should not be afraid, for everything was going to be all right. I immediately answered, "I am not afraid, and I expect quick results." It was not until later that I realized the extent of my injuries. My forehead, jaw, and one eye were badly bruised; one arm was useless, and both legs had been injured. The practitioner came that afternoon and spent quite some time with me. By the second day I had made so much progress that I was up and dressed for breakfast and remained up all day. By the fifth day, I returned to work.
Since the eye was still badly bruised, I wore a pair of dark glasses. The practitioner told me to work prayerfully on the thought of perfection. One week after the accident the eye was free from discoloration. But upon taking off the dark glasses, I realized a serious strain on the eyes had taken place, and there was a very strong suggestion that I would have to wear eyeglasses. I decided that since I had taken my stand for perfection, there was no reason why I should wear glasses. The healing of my sight was instantaneous, and the entire healing has been complete and permanent.
During this experience the practitioner told me to work with the third verse of Hymn No. 382 in the Christian Science Hymnal, which reads in part,
Vain dreams shall disappear
As Truth dawns on the sight.
Thou hast the gift of God—
Dominion over all.
Christian Science teaches us that God gave man dominion over all the earth, and although there were times when I found this truth difficult to realize, still I knew that that dominion is ever present and that I must acknowledge it and claim it.
I am very grateful for the privilege of membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, and I am especially grateful for the opportunity of having attended the Christian Science Sunday School for over twelve years.—(Miss) Kathryn Haas, Miami, Florida.
