Our family came into Christian Science...

Our family came into Christian Science through my father, who was a deep Bible student. He had searched for years for an inspiring and workable religion.

Our family had always wanted to live away from the city, and eventually we moved to a suburban residence. Commuting on the train one day, my father met a business friend who was surprised to see him. Finding out that my father had become a neighbor, he said, "I'll have my wife call on your wife."

This man's wife called on my mother, and as she was leaving she said: "Everybody on your block will invite you to his or her church. We go to the Christian Science church; if you ever care to come, we will be happy to see you."

When my father returned from business that evening, my mother told him of the visit, and they agreed to attend the branch Church of Christ, Scientist, the following Sunday. My father was reminded that a brother of his had had an instantaneous healing of inflammatory rheumatism through Christian Science. He had gone to church on crutches and had never used them again. In due time my father and mother became members of the Church of Christ, Scientist, and later had class instruction.

My husband took up the study of Christian Science and also became a church member, and our two sons attended the Sunday School. For some time one of the boys had been ill, and we asked a practitioner to help him. Because of my overanxious care she said: "You know, if you plant a seed and stand over it continuously, you cast a shadow. Now stand back and let God's sunshine reach the little boy." The child was healed, and his healing was permanent.

In speaking of a testimony, our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says in the Manual of The Mother Church (Art. VIII, Sect. 24), "More than a mere rehearsal of blessings, it scales the pinnacle of praise and illustrates the demonstration of Christ, 'who healeth all thy diseases' (Psalm 103:3)." To scale "the pinnacle of praise," I must acknowledge two outstanding experiences, one concerning supply and the other, the healing of grief.

In connection with supply, my husband had been in a business that he had inherited from his father. When that business was dissolved, it was very difficult for him to make a readjustment. During the working out of this problem our family grew closer together, and our sons' lives were established more fully on divine Principle. Ultimately there was a complete and satisfying demonstration of God's tender care for His children. One day my husband had no position, and the next day he had a fine one. The other healing was that of grief when our older son did not return from the Second World War. I was able to go forward with work in a branch church through the understanding of immortality as taught by our beloved Leader. The reference that helped me the most was this from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 427): "Man's individual being can no more die nor disappear in unconsciousness than can Soul, for both are immortal."

In gratitude for Mrs. Eddy's discovery of Christian Science, which is so practical in daily living, for class instruction, and for many happy years in branch church work, this testimony is given.—(Mrs.) Annette. G. Ford, Ridgewood, New Jersey.
