We have had many proofs of the...

We have had many proofs of the practicality of Christian Science in our family. We have relied upon it completely to rear our children, and I could fill pages with marvelous proofs of God's care for us in the form of healing and protection from harm. I should particularly like to share an experience in which a medical prediction was disproved.

Our small daughter caught her large toe in the sprocket wheel of a bicycle and severed the toe just above the upper joint. A practitioner was called immediately and help was received. Later we felt that a professional dressing on the wound was desirable, and the child was taken to the emergency hospital. There the doctor stated positively that a healing was impossible without surgery and immunization to avoid a dangerous infection. We were unwilling to subject the child to this procedure; so we signed a release from the hospital and took the little girl home with just the dressing on the wounded toe.

The child's father felt led to replace the severed end of the toe, and by the next morning it had stuck fast. Throughout the experience the child remained relatively free from discomfort and walked on the foot. However, the healing took several weeks, and at times there was evidence of inflammation. During the interval, this beautiful verse from Isaiah was frequently in our thoughts (52:7) : "How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!" The practitioner continued to remind us to rejoice in another opportunity to prove that truly God reigns and that mortal mind has no power.

Gradually, it could be seen that new flesh was growing into place and that the severed piece of the toe which had been replaced was drying up. Eventually it shriveled and fell off, and a new nail appeared. Finally the toe was completely restored. From this experience the entire family gained a purification of thought.

This healing has been an inspiration to us and to several persons who witnessed it. It is just one of a number of experiences that our family of six has had during our years of applying the truths of Christian Science. Whenever we stop to count our blessings, we realize that without Christian Science and its abundant channels of activity our lives would indeed be barren.

I am grateful for all the practitioners who have helped us along our way, for membership in The Mother Church and a Christian Science Society, and for class instruction. I shall never cease to be grateful for the opportunity of serving as a member of a Christian Science Organization at college.— (Mrs.) Lorraine Gasser, Pasadena, Texas.

I should like to verify the foregoing testimony of my wife. One aspect of the experience which I should like to relate is that before the child experienced a complete healing, it was necessary to change practitioners. This necessity appalled me. However, after I turned to the one infinite God for guidance and understanding, all sense of anxiety left. I realized that God, Spirit, Mind, was accomplishing the healing and not the human being called a practitioner. The persons known as practitioners merely help us to supplant mortal sense testimony with spiritual ideas. I am indeed grateful to Mary Baker Eddy for her revelation that man is governed by divine law.
