I am grateful for the many blessings...
I am grateful for the many blessings that have come to me through the study of Christian Science. If this religion had never done anything for me other than to give me a better concept of God, it would be enough reason for never ceasing to be grateful. For many years the mention of the word God roused in my consciousness not only fear but an indescribable sense of resentment. Through a friend I was led to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. When I learned what Christian Science says about God, my whole outlook changed completely. Fear of God and resentment toward Him vanished at once.
I read on page 140 of Science and Health, "The Christian Science God is universal, eternal, divine Love, which changeth not and causeth no evil, disease, nor death." I knew then that I had found a concept of God which I could accept. I have since learned that it is this divine Love, manifested through steadfast, spiritual, right thinking which enables us to overcome limitations and to demonstrate health, freedom, and harmony.
Before I became a student of Christian Science, I had suffered for more than a year because of a kidney ailment. In all this time medical science could do nothing for me. I even wrote to a specialist whom I knew. In his reply he gave me the same prescription for medicine and the same instructions other doctors had given me. He also told me that any delay in treating the condition would be very dangerous. This was discouraging to me, and I became very despondent—it all seemed so hopeless.
After my friend had given me Science and Health, I thought that I would try Christian Science. However, I remembered that the specialist had said that delay would be dangerous, and I thought, "If I do try Christian Science and receive no help, it might be too late for the doctors to help me." While I was thus wrestling to make a decision and idly turning the pages of Science and Health, my eye caught these words on page 202: "We admit that God has almighty power, is 'a very present help in trouble;' and yet we rely on a drug or hypnotism to heal disease, as if senseless matter or erring mortal mind had more power than omnipotent Spirit."
These words awakened me. Surely I believed "that God has almighty power" and is a present help in trouble, and yet I had been relying on everything but Him. I pondered this and decided then and there that I would be healed in Christian Science or not at all. I tore up the letter with the prescription and instructions received from the specialist. Then I threw out every bit of medicine we had in the house and called on a Christian Science practitioner for help.
I was healed of the kidney condition in one treatment. All fear of its return was met by the following few treatments. This occurred more than twenty-four years ago. Since then Christian Science has been my only help. Membership in The Mother Church and a branch church has brought many blessings, including increased spiritual unfoldment and physical healings.
I am truly grateful to God for the friend who led me to read Science and Health, through the study of which the Bible has become very dear to me. In addition, I am grateful to Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, who worked so lovingly and patiently that we might have the absolute knowledge of God which brings us into unity with Him.— (Mrs.) Anna K. Clark Smith, San Diego, California.
