Fruitage from One Class

A Sunday School teacher, whose class is made up of boys and girls of high school and junior high school age, takes special interest in helping his pupils to apply the Sunday School lessons in their daily activities. The following is his account of some of the experiences of the pupils, all of whom are putting the lessons into practice.

"Joan failed in Spanish II and was prepared to spend her entire summer vacation making up the work. Joan had not been diligent in applying Christian Science in her schoolwork, but as we talked about her relationship to God, she became awakened to the necessity for alertness and obedience. In three weeks the teacher told her she could take the test. During the test she remembered her Sunday School teaching—that God is Mind, her Mind, and the only Mind there is—and she was confident that divine Mind would reveal to her the correct answers. To the amazement of her teachers her grade was 85. This was especially remarkable in that she had inadvertently been given a test in Spanish IV, which she had never studied, instead of Spanish II, in which she had formerly failed.

"Another pupil, Susan, had been getting poor grades in arithmetic and government, and one evening she called to talk about a test which she was to take on the following day. The discussion disclosed among other shortcomings a lack of poise. It was pointed out to Susan that this quality and other Godlike qualities belonged to her by divine right and never could be taken away; also that as she confidently put her trust in God, she would be able to prove that man is God's reflection and so her work would be such that it would glorify God. When the papers were graded, the teacher expressed surprise that instead of failing in these subjects Susan had made very good grades.

"Some time later this pupil telephoned that in a few hours she would be expected to report for ushering at a large outdoor auditorium and was struggling with a belief of a painful boil on her arm. I reminded her that the same Principle which had sustained her in her schoolwork was at hand to comfort and heal her in this instance. She gratefully accepted the truth and was able to usher that evening, using her arm constantly. She clung steadfastly to the truth of the words of Mary Baker Eddy in 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' (p. 463), 'A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive,' and in a few days the trouble was entirely overcome.

"One of the boys. Bill, called me at home with deep concern over his mother, who had been ill for ten days with what seemed to be a heart condition. She feared that she was passing on. I reminded him of Hymn No. 145 in the Christian Science Hymnal, which begins.

In atmosphere of Love divine,
We live, and move, and breathe.

I also pointed mil that since God could not have a heart attack and could not die, this could not happen to His child, who is His reflection. Bill was asked to talk with his mother about these truths. He did so, and within a few minutes his mother was able to breathe normally for the first time in many days, and the trouble was overcome. Later she telephoned me to express her gratitude for the Christian Science Sunday School.

"Another boy, Henry, while deeply engrossed in a test, was startled to see his high school teacher snatch his paper from his desk along with the papers of five or six other boys near him. The teacher flung the papers into the wastebasket, remarking that those from whom he had taken them had been cheating and that he would mark them all failures.

"Henry had not been cheating, and at first he was resentful, but he quickly overcame his resentment by turning his thought to the truth concerning man in God's image and likeness, as set forth by Mrs. Eddy on page 475 of Science and Health. Soon the teacher picked up the wastebasket, found Henry's paper and returned it to him with the remark. 'You were not cheating.'

"Another boy, David, enjoys making puppets. At one time, after having started several puppets, he found it difficult to complete the heads. They had not developed as he felt they should. But when he paused for a few moments and turned in prayer to divine Love for help, the puppet heads were soon finished.

"He took them to a famous puppet theater to show them to the manager, who was a friend of his family. This friend looked over the work carefully and then said: 'David, these are excellent, especially the heads. Your father must have, helped you make them. Didn't he?' Naturally David was very happy. Realizing, as he had been taught in Sunday School, that his Father was God, he knew that indeed his Father had helped him."
