GOOD KNOWS NO OPPOSITION

[Original article in German]

When we are about to enter a dark room with a light, we do not wonder whether the darkness in that room will resist the light or whether the light will dispel the darkness. We know that in the presence of the light the darkness, which may have seemed very black and very real, will simply vanish. We also know that darkness does not disappear gradually and reluctantly before the light, but instantly.

The nature of mental darkness is completely illusory and, in the presence of the light of Truth, is entirely substanceless. This means that darkness itself is not an object, is not truth, is not reality. Through the light of his spiritual understanding, his illumined knowledge of the impotence of matter and of the omnipotence of Spirit, God, good, Jesus destroyed unhesitatingly and instantaneously the darkness of materiality, whether it appeared to be sickness or death, or was manifested as sin, lack, or the fury of the storm or waves.

Christian Science reveals the wonderful truth that to God, who is infinite Spirit and Love, and to His reflection, the true spiritual man, there is no opposition, since all power belongs exclusively to God. How wonderful it is when we first glimpse the truth that whatever seems to trouble, to tyrannize over, or to hold mankind in fear and trembling can offer no real opposition or resistance, for, as Christian Science declares, evil has no identity or reality. It is because of their ignorance concerning the truth of being that mortals attribute power and reality to error and thus limit themselves by their own beliefs.

Mary Baker Eddy explains with irrefutable logic that since all power belongs to God, good, there can be no power left for evil; that since God, infinite, unlimited Spirit, fills all space, there is no space left for evil and matter to fill. Mrs. Eddy divests evil of all its suppositional and assumed power and reality. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she says (p. 287), "Error is false, mortal belief; it is illusion, without spiritual identity or foundation, and it has no real existence."

The writer herself has found that error in the form of physical in-harmony can offer no resistance to the working of the truth as presented to us in the Bible and in the inspired writings of our Leader. For years the writer had suffered periodically from such severe pains that she often lost consciousness. The painful condition seemed to offer stubborn resistance to medical treatment and to all drugs. Then she heard of Christian Science and started to study Science and Health, not because she hoped to be healed, but because she was interested in this Science as a religion.

After a very short time she knew that she had found the religion she had been seeking for years. Her thinking was filled with inexpressible joy and gratitude for the marvelous revelations she found in this textbook, which in turn unlocked the treasures of the Bible. One day she realized that she was free from all pain. The seemingly very stubborn condition had completely disappeared. She knew that she owed this healing entirely to the study of Science and Health, for through it her consciousness had been filled with the liberating light of Truth, and thus the darkness of pain and the fear of it had been destroyed.

On page 224 of Science and Health our revered Leader writes: "The power of God brings deliverance to the captive. No power can withstand divine Love." Christian Scientists have every reason to rejoice each day in the consciousness that there is in truth nothing that can resist good, and that divine Love, when rightly understood and demonstrated in daily life, is our complete protection from all that evil claims.

In the twelfth chapter of Revelation the Apostle John describes very vividly how the darkness of error, symbolized by the great red dragon, tries to offer resistance to the idea of good and to spiritual light and reality.

In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy describes this struggle in the following inspired words (p. 567): "Against Love, the dragon warreth not long, for he is killed by the divine Principle. Truth and Love prevail against the dragon because the dragon cannot war with them."

Let us rejoice in the consciousness that however great the darkness of error may seem to be, it can never resist the light of Truth. The hopelessness of error's case is expressed in the following words (Rev. 12:9): "The great dragon was cast out."
