Because of my hungering for a...
Because of my hungering for a way of life that I could not find in the orthodox church of which I was a member, I turned to Christian Science. A physical healing followed my reading the chapter on Prayer in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
When leaving my home in the early hours of the morning one day I reminded myself of the truths that I had been learning in Christian Science. After picking up a passenger who was to ride to work with me, I continued silently to know the truth. As I approached a railroad crossing, the tracks appeared to be clear, but as I was about to cross them I suddenly heard loud shouting. To my astonishment I saw a freight train approaching. It was impossible to stop in time to avoid a collision, and to speed up afforded no prospect of beating the train to the crossing.
Split-second thinking was required, and I veered to the left, the same direction in which the freight train was moving. My car was sideswiped and dragged about forty feet. The other passenger and I were unharmed. The police asked me to get a wrecker so that my car could be moved, but to the astonishment of the crowd that had collected I started my motor and was able to drive to my destination some thirty miles away.
Later that same year an outbreak of spinal meningitis was reported. Some days later I found myself paralyzed from my waist up. I reported to the Army surgeon, as civilian employees were required to do. After an examination he ordered me to place myself under the care of a civilian doctor, who he said would have better facilities for taking care of me than were available in the camp hospital.
I spent the rest of the day reading the chapters "Prayer" and "Christian Science Practice" in the Christian Science textbook. On my arrival home later in the day my wife joined in helping me to meet the condition. That night I decided to have her consult a devoted student of Christian Science who was living across the street from our home.
A half hour later my wife returned with some references in the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, assuring me that our friend was working for me. My wife then started to read to me, and in a very few minutes I drifted off to sleep. At five o'clock the following morning, my usual hour for rising, I awakened greatly refreshed and feeling entirely free from all traces of the physical difficulty I had experienced.
For this beautiful demonstration of the healing efficacy of Christian Science and for many other rich experiences, I am deeply grateful to God.—Eric G. Kingwell, Corvallis, Oregon.
