On this program, Mrs. Evalyn Hall of Evanston, Illinois, told of her own experience. The program was as follows:

Speaker: One of the best-known statements of Christ Jesus is the promise, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Nearly everyone at some time has asked the question, "What is truth?" And all of us would like to know more of how truth can make us free in practical ways. Like many others, our guest today searched for a satisfying understanding of truth. And when she found it, it brought freedom to her. Here is Mrs. Evalyn Hall of Evanston, Illinois, and she'll tell us about it in her own words.

Mrs. Hall: When Christian Science found me, I knew nothing about it and its healing power. I had never been in a Christian Science church.

The textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, had been given to me by a relative who was not interested in it. I too put the book on the shelf, until one day I turned to it out of curiosity and started to read.

To my great joy I found this book to be a veritable key or unfoldment of the profound truths of the Bible. This discovery contained a new language for me, and the reading went very slowly. However, with Science and Health and a dictionary, I studied many hours each day, hiding the book before my family came home in the evening because we had heard only jokes about Christian Science.

It took about three months of patient study, reading and rereading, to reach the passage on page 428 where Mrs. Eddy says, "Man's privilege at this supreme moment is to prove the words of our Master. ..." The full sentence is: "Man's privilege at this supreme moment is to prove the words of our Master: 'If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.'" But as I thought about it then, I realized that the healings which Christ Jesus performed are just as possible today for those who understand and apply his teachings. I thought that since I had been learning that I was God's man, I too could prove it. It was now my privilege.

For about eleven years I had been in bondage to a food allergy, not being able to eat eggs in any form. Even the slightest amount of eggs used in any food caused my eyes to swell up close for two or three days with the result that I was barely able to see. When away from home I never could be sure whether the food contained the offensive eggs.

Now, when I read the words from Science and Health, "Man's privilege at this supreme moment is to prove the words of our Master," I knew I was released from my bondage, and I had discovered the way to prove it through the "words of our Master." Without any fear and with complete confidence I went to the kitchen and prepared a luncheon of eggs. Never had food tasted so good or never have I been so grateful for an accomplished healing. That was more than ten years ago, and I have eaten eggs without any ill effects ever since.

That evening when my family returned home, I went rushing to greet them with the news of my beautiful healing. Needless to say, I no longer hid my precious books, and from that day, Christian Science has always brought healing whenever I needed it.

Speaker: Many thanks, Mrs. Hall, for sharing that fine healing with us. It brings out some points I'd like to discuss with our radio audience.

Friends, our guest read a book and was healed. But of course there's much more to the story than that. What arrested her attention was the discovery, as she put it, that Science and Health was the key to the profound truths of the Bible. So she studied the Christian Science textbook thoroughly because she was searching for truth.

It's quite natural to seek truth in a better understanding of the Bible. And why is this so? Because the truth that explains the meaning of life, the nature of reality, the facts concerning God and man and the universe—this truth is of God. It is not of human origin. It must be found in the understanding of the great First Cause, in the understanding of divine Spirit, not matter. The fact is that God is Truth, the creator and source of all that is true and real.

And so our guest read and reread the Christian Science textbook because it helped her to understand the Bible. And then, after months of study, there suddenly came to her a startling realization. It awakened her thought so thoroughly that it brought her healing. And what was this realization? She realized that divine Truth, God, is unchanging, eternal, everywhere, always right here. She saw that the truth Jesus revealed concerning God and man is far deeper, more fundamental than anything material or temporary. This same spiritual truth was seen and proved in some degree by Moses and the prophets. It is always available.

Along with this came another realization, and it was equally important. This was that whatever is true is demonstrable. It can be proved. And so if the truth the Master taught is right here now, then it can be demonstrated right here now in the way Jesus and his disciples proved it.

Now, how did Jesus prove the truth he taught? He said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," and then he proved this by releasing people from the bondage of disease, deformity, insanity, wrongdoing. Through his understanding of God he brought them freedom. And why was he able to do this? Why does the understanding of God bring freedom? Because there can be no bondage of any kind in divine Truth. The fact is that disease, suffering, all discord, are contrary to the very nature of the one infinite God who is Life, Truth, and Love. God never made them, never made suffering, limitation, bondage, or sent them to His children. As Mary Baker Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 243): "Sickness, sin, and death are not fruits of Life. They are inharmonies which Truth destroys." And she also says (p. 386), "Error, not Truth, produces all the suffering on earth." And so we can see that discords are only errors or lies that have no place, no basis in all-powerful divine Truth. They can be proved untrue, unreal, powerless, however real they may appear to human sense.

Since there is no discord, no suffering or bondage anywhere in divine Truth, God, there can be none in His creation. There can be none attached to man, made in the image and likeness of God, divine Spirit. This is a fundamental spiritual fact, or truth, which Jesus proved by healing the sick.

And so the understanding of divine Truth, God, and of the real nature of His creation uplifts and purifies our thinking. It brings renewal of the spirit, regeneration of character, and healing to the body. Thus it was that our guest was healed, not by chance nor by a human mental method, but by awakening to the all-powerful, ever-present nature of God, divine Truth, in whom discord is unknown.
