Christian Science was first presented...

Christian Science was first presented to me after I had had four major operations. Two of the operations were for the removal of obstructions caused by adhesions, necessitating the removal of parts of the intestines. I was told that another operation would be impossible, since it would not be safe to remove more of the intestines, and that if another obstruction should form, the only thing for me to do would be to go to a hospital, where I would be kept under opiates until I passed on.

I read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and was very much impressed. When the obstruction formed again and I was seriously ill, I decided to take my stand wholly for Christian Science, although I had not studied this Science daily, nor tried to solve any problems through it. A practitioner was called, and although I was in great pain, I was able to listen to every word that was said and to repeat everything I was told to say. We repeated the Lord's Prayer with the spiritual interpretation, given in Science and Health (pp. 16, 17), and "the scientific statement of being" (ibid., p. 468). In three hours all pain was gone, and in three days I was completely healed.

I was healed of bad facial burns when an oven, which had become filled with gas, exploded. My first thought was of scars, but immediately the thought came of the three Hebrews who were cast into the fiery furnace and who were untouched by the fire (see Daniel 3). I was confident that I would come out of this experience with nothing to remind me of it. Through the help of a practitioner, all traces of the burn disappeared that night, and I attended church the next morning.

At one time my income was so small that it was inadequate to meet the current expenses, and bills were piling up. One Sunday I went to church with one dollar and twenty-eight cents in my purse. This was all I would have for food until the following Saturday. My first thought was to put the twenty-eight cents in the collection and keep the dollar. Immediately these words from the Bible came to me (I Chron. 29:14): "All things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee." I put the dollar in the collection, keeping the twenty-eight cents. I knew my need was already taken care of, since, as Mrs. Eddy writes (Science and Health, p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every humanneed." The following Tuesday a check came which was large enough to pay my bills and to buy food also. From that time on my supply increased, and I gained more spiritual understanding.

I am grateful for the healing of grief soon after the passing of my husband. As I refused to submit to self-pity and selfishness, which are mortal beliefs and are not included in God's universe of spiritual ideas, the sunlight of Truth dispelled the shadows of grief. I am humbly grateful to God for the truth demonstrated by Jesus and revealed by Mrs. Eddy, who so lovingly gave us the key to the Scriptures. I am and shall always be grateful for Christian Science.—(Mrs.) Oneta A. Horton, Santa Ana, California.
