On this program George L. Aghamalian of Brooklyn, New York, told of his own experience, as follows:

When I was a young boy I returned home from school one afternoon with what appeared to be a slight earache. During the next couple of days the pain persisted and became more intense. I was then taken to a prominent Brooklyn doctor by my mother for a diagnosis. He examined me and gravely told her that I had double mastoiditis and both ears would have to be operated on immediately. "There is not a moment to lose," he said.

At the time my family and I had just taken up the study of Christian Science, and although we had a very high regard for our new-found religion, my mother was hesitant about depending upon it in a case of this sort. However, she felt impelled to postpone the operation for a few days and give prayerful consideration to the whole matter. She turned to the doctor and said, "I would like some time to think this over."

He replied: "My dear woman, there is no time for such a decision. I must call an ambulance at once and get this boy to a hospital. If you do not do this, I will have to drop all responsibility for his life."

Mother did not become fearful at this statement, and on the way home she asked me what I wanted to do—either have treatment in Christian Science or to go to the hospital. I quickly replied, "I want to be healed in Christian Science." I felt this trust and reliance, since I had learned so much about God's healing power while going to the Christian Science Sunday School. At this point we asked the help of an authorized Christian Science practitioner, who gave me Christian Science treatment daily and came to my home periodically for a number of weeks until a complete healing was realized in Christian Science.

During the time that the practitioner was working, many undesirable traits of character, such as willfulness and selfishness, had to be replaced in my thinking. In addition to this, my mother had to loose me from the thought that I had inherited certain physical conditions from my father. After this, I began to get better.

It was necessary for me to return to the physician who had diagnosed the case in order to receive a medical certificate readmitting me to school. Upon my arrival at his office, he expressed great amazement that I was still alive and told my mother that he had watched the obituary column every evening for my name. He then re-examined my ears and stated that I was perfectly healed.

This healing of mastoid through Christian Science treatment has been permanent and complete. During the Second World War, I flew with the United States Army Air Force, often at high altitudes, without any discomfort at all, and passed several rigid physical examinations.

The commentary was as follows:

You know, friends, childhood should be a happy time for children and parents alike. But sometimes childhood is thought of as a time when there are many things for parents to be afraid of—things like sickness and contagion, accidents and heredity.

But your home does not have to be undermined by fear, disease, or any discord. Many parents are learning that there is an understanding of God which wipes out fear and destroys disease and its symptoms. This understanding was taught and practiced by the Master, Christ Jesus. It is the understanding that God is Love and gives only good to His children. The fact that God is good and good alone is set forth in the Bible and is one of the fundamental teachings of Christian Science.

When God's loving care for His children is understood, parents find they can face any situation with confidence. They are strengthened in carrying out their parental responsibility because they can rely on God, the one sure source of health and protection. They learn that the greatest opportunity parents can have is to understand— and help their children understand —how to utilize the ever-present healing power of God.

Now I know that sometimes sickness seems very frightening to parents. It isn't unusual for a parent to hesitate at first to rely on God alone to heal a child. You'll remember our guest's mother hesitated for a while herself. But when through Christian Science you begin to grasp, to really appreciate, the great power and goodness and love of God, you know without question that you can trust Him in every situation. You find that, as the Bible says, it is God "who healeth all thy diseases; who redeemeth thy life from destruction."

And what reassurance and healing are available to you and your loved ones when you begin to understand that God is divine Love and that He is the only real creator, as the Bible tells us! He is altogether loving and good and so could never make sickness, disease, or anything harmful. It becomes more clear to you that your children cannot suffer from that which God never made and which therefore is not actually real.

Now this doesn't mean that Christian Science ignores disease. What happens is that you destroy it by learning that disease is no more real or powerful than a mistake in addition. Just as a mistake in arithmetic vanishes in the light of correct knowledge, so disease vanishes when you understand man's spiritual status as the child of God.

To understand man's true nature, let us remember that God, the creator of all, is divine Spirit, perfect Life. Thus you no longer think of your child as a physical being. You learn to see him as he really is, the spiritual likeness of God who has inherited only that which God imparts. And as this takes place, man's God-given health and strength become more evident. Disability gives way to perfect action and sickness to health.

Friends, our guest and his mother proved that when these truths are understood, they operate as divine law, which wipes out discord. God's law extends to every detail of existence, but it needs to be understood. Then you can trust God in every situation. The fact that God's help is always available, every moment, is expressed very simply by Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" where she writes (p. 494): "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need. It is not well to imagine that Jesus demonstrated the divine power to heal only for a select number or for a limited period of time, since to all mankind and in every hour, divine Love supplies all good."
