THE WAY OF SPIRITUAL PROGRESS

In the ever-revelatory Sermon on the Mount, Christ Jesus outlined in imperishable precept and parable the way of life for those who would be his disciples. And it is a way of life, he made clear, which leads to a great goal. "Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life" (Matt. 7:13, 14). The way he ordained for us, then, is the way that demonstrates the great fact that man lives eternally because he is the image and likeness of God—Life itself.

Through his entire ministry Jesus imparted and demonstrated the truth of man's inseparability from God, the truth which, when there is some understanding of it, redeems individual men and women from the self-imposed and world-accepted beliefs of separation from God which are called sin, disease, and death. Jesus knew and taught that just in proportion as men perceive God, Mind, as the divine cause of their being and identify themselves as individual manifestations of that cause, the vision of ultimate reality and individual immortality widens. Through such vision diseases are healed and burdens lightened.

Christian Science is a clear and practicable statement in this age of the metaphysical truth which Jesus taught and demonstrated, the truth of man's oneness, or unity, with God, Life, Mind. As Jesus indicated the way to achieve redemption from present errors and to realize ultimate spiritual perfection, "the way, which leadeth unto life," so also did Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. On page 324 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she writes: "The way is straight and narrow, which leads to the understanding that God is the only Life. It is a warfare with the flesh, in which we must conquer sin, sickness, and death, either here or hereafter,—certainly before we can reach the goal of Spirit, or life in God."
