When our oldest daughter passed...

When our oldest daughter passed on I felt that God had been very unkind. A friend called on me and left a Sentinel. In reading it I found many passages from the Bible. Also it spoke often about the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I felt that I had to get that textbook. When I did, I read it from cover to cover three times. Then I realized that it was not God, but erroneous belief which had deprived us of our daughter.

While I was reading the textbook "the peace of God, which passeth all understanding" (Phil. 4:7) came to me and healed my troubled thought. At the same time I was healed of a double rupture. I knew then that Christian Science was what I needed. Our family began to study the weekly Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly every morning before the children went to school. Gradually we came to understand how God heals through Science.

Our sons, who were athletes, always turned to the truth and were quickly healed when problems presented themselves. One of the boys was carried off the field unconscious after a baseball had hit him in the face with much force. For hours we repeated the hymns in our Christian Science Hymnal. Also we studied the lesson. The boy was in much pain and quite filled with fear. He asked why the healing was taking so long, and I replied that we must be persistent in knowing the truth, and then the healing would come. Just as the dawn was breaking he fell asleep. When he came downstairs after a short time, he was filled with joy, for the pain was gone. He said that his Father-Mother God had healed him. Before long there was no trace of the injury.

Mrs. Eddy's hymns are a great help to me. At a time of sorrow the second stanza of the Communion Hymn (Poems by Mrs. Eddy, p. 75) brought a truly wonderful healing. The words kept repeating themselves in my thought till all gloom was gone and the radiant glory of God's endless day came to me.

The Lord's Prayer and its spiritual interpretation, given on pages 16 and 17 of Science and Health, have also been very helpful. They healed me at one time when I was in great pain while traveling alone. When I came to the words, "Enable us to know,— as in heaven, so on earth,—God is omnipotent, supreme," the pain suddenly ceased. My gratitude was boundless. At another time a throbbing sensation in my body filled me with fear. That week's Bible Lesson included the First Commandment (Ex. 20:3), "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." Knowing that I had made an idol of my fear, which needed to be destroyed, I worked for hours with this Commandment; then I fell asleep. Never again was I troubled with the discordant condition.

Mrs. Eddy writes in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 242), "Unless you fully perceive that you are the child of God, hence perfect, you have no Principle to demonstrate and no rule for its demonstration." I knew that God is perfect, but I could not see how I could be perfect. However, as I studied Christian Science and came to see man as the reflection of God, our heavenly Father, I realized that in reality I and everyone else must express all good through reflecting Him.

I have been grateful for Christian Science for more than thirty-five years. Class instruction and the association meetings mean much to me, and I thank God for our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, and for our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and her revelation.—(Mrs.) Margaret S. Tulloch, Boston, Massachusetts.
