LET US SUPPORT RIGHTEOUS GOVERNMENT

Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, gives us in her writings many revealing statements for daily use in support of righteous government throughout the world. In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," she writes (p. 379), "The real jurisdiction of the world is in Mind, controlling every effect and recognizing all causation as vested in divine Mind." This outstanding statement indicates that God, the only cause, governs in all the affairs of men.

Regardless of the apparent material testimony of misgoverment, and the claims of military, religious, or political domination, the Christ is ever present to expose and destroy all evil and to establish the supreme power of divine Mind in the world.

It is the duty of all Christian Scientists to maintain consistently each day that the influence of the Christ is present in the consciousness of every individual, testifying to and revealing the beneficent government of all-encompassing Love. He who consistently accepts and practices the truths of Christian Science is not taken in by the awful evidences of domination and misgovernment in the world. He is the spiritual minuteman of today, always ready to wield the sword of Spirit under divine direction. Truth springs alive spontaneously in his thought to detect and reject every lie of mortality presenting itself for acceptance as reality.

Such a one is never fearful for his own safety or for that of his fellow men, because he knows that, as the prophet declares of God (Dan. 4:35), "He doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?"

The great red dragon described in the book of Revelation, swollen with lust, dishonesty, and animality, claimed dominion over the world. But it was slain by the Lamb, by innocence and Truth. So in the present age the Lamb of God, the pure Christ-consciousness, with which each one of us is endowed, is with power to expose and annihilate every lie of mortality. So-called insurmountable problems, incurable diseases, evil habits, threatened calamities, insane claims of domination over men, all must yield to the might of Spirit—to the innocence and purity of the Christ-consciousness. The prophet writes (Zech. 4:6), "This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts."

The spiritual warfare of the Christian Scientist on behalf of the establishment of righteous government is not primarily against persons or groups of persons, against military power, against ecclesiastical or political machines. It is with the lie which claims that man is mortal, that he is separate from God, and attempts to impose upon him a government apart from Spirit. This spiritual warfare is carried on in the consciousness of the individual through righteous prayer, through the identification of thought with the spiritual truths of existence as revealed in Christian Science.

The Apostle Paul admonishes us to put on the whole armor of God that we may be able to take our stand against all the claims of evil. This whole armor is the full revelation of Christian Science. To put it on requires the consistent recognition and exemplification of the truth that man is the infinite expression of the infinite All, and is equipped with the unlimited power of Spirit. The apostle writes (Eph. 6:12), "We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."

An important point to be recognized in support of righteous government is given by Mrs. Eddy in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 249): "You may condemn evil in the abstract without harming any one or your own moral sense, but condemn persons seldom, if ever. Improve every opportunity to correct sin through your own perfectness. When error strives to be heard above Truth, let the 'still small voice' produce God's phenomena." Are we heeding this advice daily? Are we grasping every opportunity to correct sin in ourselves and in others through a more sincere desire and effort to identify every individual with the Christ?

In our prayers we must leave no one out of the kingdom of heaven; otherwise we accept the belief that God is not supreme. Our revered Leader tells us (No and Yes, p. 39): "True prayer is not asking God for love; it is learning to love, and to include all mankind in one affection."

In the face of impending disaster, misgovernment, or spiritual wickedness in high places, are we letting the still small voice of Truth assure us of God's omnipotence and omnipresence? If we are doing this, our progress is assured and the outcome will be fruitful, even though the evidence is not immediately apparent.

Unless human government patterns the divine, it has no foundation on which to stand, and it inevitably falls. Christian Scientists can hasten the establishment of righteous government on earth through exemplifying obedience to Principle in their daily lives—by bringing every thought into obedience to the Christ, and by the consistent recognition of the fact that the executive, legislative, and judicial power of divine Love is supreme. This enables us to pray with certainty (Matt. 6: 13), "Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever."
